YESTERDAY: Susan Drake is in a strange position with the two men who most interest her in her senior year at State. One is the very reserved football hero, Todd Malone, whom she just has seen carry State to vic- tory almost singlehanded. The other man is Philip Humphries, brilliant chemist, who has no more use for football than he has for rattlesnakes. Todd is too re- mote, Susan thinks; Phili, is a little wild. But a whole school vear stretches before her— Chapter Fou.’ Everybody’s Hero DD MALONE was every- body’s hero; there was no mistake about that, Susan re- flected as she glanced at the Sun- day papers. It was Malone in the headlines, Malone all through the story, an action picture of Malone skirting right end, a grinning, dripping Todd Malone emerging from the shower room after the game, a towel wrapped around him. It must be very unsatisfactory. she, thought, to have to share a hero? with a half million other people. Not that she was looking for’a hero but when she picked one. out ‘she’d want him :to be private property. All her’s. Not toibe shared. A little selfish, maybe, she con- sidered, honestly.. But when it came down to it a girl had a Tight {to ‘be selfish in certain things. « ‘ Susan looked at her watch and went to the foot of the stairs. “Anyone going toward the li- brary?” she called up. Amy Bassett poked her head over the railing above. “Susie, you losing your mind? One week of school and you're bound for the books already.” Amy followed up with.a shud- der,-“You’d better count on a ‘I_should have known better,” Susan said sagely. “But ’m warn- ing you, Amy Bassett, this is the semester that shall go down in history as' The Great Revolt—the Great Drake Revolt against last- minute borrowers of class-notes. If ygti think I’m going to be the dutiful dope who catches all the lectures for some of you parasites you're slightly balmy. “I'll take everything down in Sanskrit or African Swahili if I have to,” Susan threatened. Amy smirked. “I wouldn’t put it past you—if you could handle Sanskrit.” 2 “Consider yourself warned.” Til spread the word,” Amy grinned. At the library, Susan selected a, book on her history required reading list and took it down- stairs to be checked out. Spoil Sport SS. had been standing in line only a few seconds when she heard a familiar voice behind her. “You're sure getting off to a running start, aren’t you .. .?” She turned. It was Todd and he had a couple of books under his arm, himself. She recovered quickly from a small start of sur- prise: _ “Night calls the crow black,” she said significantly. “T have to,” he explained. “We're kind of figuring on a big season and the schedule gets mur- derous later on. Contrary to what sdme of you people think, we poor guys. with the strong backs and weak minds do a little more than come to class to sleep.” | They started toward the door togesher. “Gqing my way?” he She) registered mock. surprise. “You!mean I: really can walk WINS COMMISSION — John Robinson, ; garet street, has commission as second lieutenant at the Coast Artillery School at Fort Monroe, Va. Buzz is right. About you, I mean.” “Women,” *said Todd loftily, “as you will discover some day, are strictly poison.” “Agreed for the most part, but why don’t you give this Drake kid a tumble? I would go for her myself.” “If it weren’t for Jane’ Mat- thews,” Todd finished. “Nope, cap’n.
