That $2,500 which County Tax As- sessor Claude Gandolfo is asking from the legislature, for instance, is going to result in a prime crop of headaches for a small army of Monroe county residents who have been getting away with murder on their assess- ments. to hire several new employes, but the em- ployes are going to be there for the purpose of ferreting out the hundreds of taxpayers who have been given ridiculously low as- sessments, or no assessments at all. Collection of those assessments, of course, will result in tax savings to others, but some of the other plans being thought up in Washington and Tallahassee will make «ure that no one saves much. The legislature ‘will put a new bite on horse racing, which doesn’t hurt anyone in | Key West, but it is considering a tax on in- comes ard dallying with the idea of one on alt water fishing that would sink teeth in- \ ‘5 most of the people here. Meanwhile, in Washington, where the | the | really high grade spending goes on, treasury has worked out a_ plan which would make many taxpayers put up six times their this year’s contribution. Income taxes almost certainly are bound fo per cent tax on corporations. A check on the figures reveals that a family which has | payed $11 income tax on a $2,500 income, may be paying $72 next year, while a single person with a $1,000 ineome wonld pay $13.29 instead of $4.40. | In addition, the treasury plans taxes on | in- and | checks, with creases in liquor and cigarette taxes new levies on the smaller things, such as chewing gum and soft drinks. There can be no skimping at this point in the defense of the United States, but as the taxpayer painfully digs out the money he will be hoping that there isn’t much waste, either. LIFE SPAN IS NOT LONGER © Many readers of The Citizen are un- der the impression that the life span of man has increased within the recent century. The fact is, however, that this is not true and the capacity of man to live a longer is no better than that of his an- cestors. The confusion arises out. of the ap- plication of sanitary S¢ience in the past cen- tury, which has brought. more people through the hitherto dangerous period of infancy, permitting them to. survive into childhood, early adult life and maturity. For this reason, the “expectation of life” is eighteen years more than it was a century ago but the individual capacity to live more years has not increased. To explain this, one should remember | that the expectation of life is based on the average death age of individuals. It is obvious that this average age will advance if the lives of infants and young children are saved, regardless of the fact that old men and women continue to die at the ap- pointed three score years and ten.
