SATURDAY, BEBRUARY 2! hg a ee THE KEY WEST CITIZEN MEMORY OF THE Mm moon | by Jeanne Bowman YESTERVAY: Jonn telis Con- stance he doecn’t trust the Taylors and wants to buy them off. Constance’ is shaken but a taik with old Peter renews her determination to fight. Chapter 30 Parade rode off and Pedersen came up. “Miss Cabrillo.” hig blue eyes’ were lined with worry. “I'd go. We need the support of Beachport. We can’t offend them. I have a trailer here; I'll have Pedro take Pancho in to town.” Constance thought of Beach- Port, the communal spirit of the people, her place in the commu- nity. “But what will you do?” she asked. “You're here alone. We don’t know that the men will return in time to help you. I'll try. I will—” “I know,” he smiled at her. “And Mrs. Pedersen and Carl Junior, and Pedro, and Peter Senior. We'll make out; and after it’s over we'll talk about getting new men in; men I can trust.” Constance thrust out her hand, found it crushed by the grasp of the big Dane, and hurried back to the house. The outfit Pedro had brought her on her first visit; the blue shirt and golden *kerchief, Ca- brillo colors. John waited patiently until she was ready, then they streaked towards Beachport, and half way in passed Pedro, with Pancho and his own mount in a trailer. The rest was a blur; the hotel; crowds milling; people in costuny men dressed in prospectors’ out- fits, a thousand women emulating Mae West; a thousand more in full Spanish. skirts, tight bodices and lace mantillas. Men in tight velvet breeches, long silk hose, and jackets corded with dancing velour pompoms. Flat hats with pompoms jiggling. Constance found herself ree ed with a roar of approval. Judge Franck stood her on a table and announced in a stentorian voice: “Michael Mahoney!” John had disappeared. Some- how she found herself in a city stable confronting a bewildered Pancho, who tossed his head and neighed his disapproval of the trappings with which he was dec- orated.. “Don’t take it so hard,” whis- epered Constance. “I don’t like this cag! better than you do.” jomeone led Pancho to the street. A long line formed behind them. “Go along Main Street to the water-front, along the water- front to the railroad track, and back up that street to the cross- ing,” ordered a man in a Stetson. Constance breathed deeply, dug her. knees into Pancho’s flanks to. hold’ him, and nodded. They were off. Someone rode beside her. In a moment, when she could control this foo) horse of hers, she would see who it was. Behind her the band blared a melody. A ribald voice took up the theme. “Ride, tenderfoot, ride,” he bellowed, and the marchers picked up the words and thundered them out. Pancho shook himself and be- jan wiggling his shoulders, minc- ing, prancing, €eeping step to the music. “You doggone adagio dancer,” scolded Constance, and Pancho picked up his ears. “Nice going,” observed rider at Constance’s side. Constance looked up. Pedro! Pedro in his vaquero outfit, #he stamp of El Cabrillo on hat band, sed and wide, brass-studded t. OHN the “When you can spare an eye, look behind,” he suggested. Constance looked at Pedro in- stead, and hated him. Then curi- osity became too much for dis- cretion, and she turned her head. ‘Purely Cabrillo” Brae: them was a carriage} its side panels painted with pictures of the Saints; its wheelS eee on the box sat Juliano; Juliano in velvet and sky- S and gold, arms folded aeross his chest. Beside him rode Don, resplen- dent in black velvet, only a waistband of blue and gold indi- cating his heritage. “The last of the Dons,” quoted Pedro airily. Constance turned quickly, but not. before she had seen her mother in gold lace, seated in the carriage, a delightful Juanita at her feet. “Ride, tenderfoot, ride,” lowed the plump busin who seemed responsible ing the parade in line. “The last of the hissed Constance at Pedro. Pedro doubled over his with a great laugh Then, somehow, Constance caught the spirit of the parade, the spirit of the fiesta. It was fun, this riding on a dancing horse. Pancho appreciated his rile. His wise amber eyes picked every beauty in the crowd and courtesied, while the audi nce | roared ap; tried valia fied Seat. bel full, of n “You do Constance bowed and smiled at i reviewing stand, and out of} of her mouth conclusions. chased with ew corned my SUBSCRIBE FOR THE saddle | Constance dug her heels into Pancho’s flanks, and the horse arose in astonished indignation, waved his forefeet at Pedro’s mount and returned to the pave- ment. The depot was ahead. A train was c ng down the grade. A mantilla-covered head was thrust out of the engineer’s window; Donna, storiously*beautiful infer moment of triumph. Pancho didn’t like trainsvifte'd heard a few of them while he was browsing on his golden acre He'd probably hoped that some day he could show them exactly what he thought of them. Pancho chose this moment for his demonstration. Constance was securely seated in the saddle one minute, the next she thought surely she had been transferred to Pegasus. This horse had wings. He also had heels. He showed his heels to the approaching engine, and then he put his wings into play. Constance, hitting the saddle at intervals, went down the track of the Longshore Pacific. When Pancho thought he had proven his contempt he stopped. But then, thought Constance hysteri- cally, he was on the edge of the pier and nothing but the blue Pacific lay beyond. Behind lay nothing but space; empty space, two miles of it, and one lone rider with a mount carefully picking his way across the. ties, Pedro! Constance looked again. Be- hind Pedro came aX éhtourage. The parade, she thought, had Pancho was willing to return. Constance met Pedro half way to the mainland. Pedro’s eye- brows were inquisitive scimitars, his mouth perfectly controlled. “Didn't care for the parade?” he asked, as the plump major- domo rode madly up to them. “Pancho,” returned Constance evenly, “knows he is owned by a Mahoney. The parade was purely Cabrillo.” Pay-Off ONSTANCE found her car packed with Beachport guests. She managed to squeeze behind the wheel and made the drive with mad laughter in her ears. El Cabrillo was alive again. There was to be a ball; it would last until dawn. Half-hearmg, she answered questions, then realized her young self-invited guests re- quired no answers, and concen- trated on the road. She saw Don’s car flash past hers, filled to the running boards. She saw other cars, and when she reached the terminal of El Cabrillo Real she found them disgorging. Constance slipped through the crowd jammed at the front doors, and went to her room to change. She stepped inside and faced a black-laced fury: Donna, cheeks scarlet, eyes flashing with anger. “That was a nice trick for one sister to play on arfther,” she raged. “And believe me, those lumbermen are furious. They plan everything, have motion pic- ture cameras, newspaper men and photographers up from San Fran- rything staged for my into Beachport to meet the parade; and what happens?” Constance looked at her in mute consternation “Tl tell you what; you, my very own sister, who is so jealous of a cow-hand that she can’t see straight, puts on such a show that the parade turns and follows her clear out to a pier a mile | away, and there I am in my lengine ... with with... no paraae. “Donna,” Constance wondered whether she should laugh or cry. “I couldn't help that. Pancho has never had to face an engine be- fore. If you couldn't ride , him across a mud-hole, you can imag- ine what it was like trying to keep him in line with the crowd shouting. bands playing, and that éngine roaring down the grade.” “Oh, no,” Donna wiped her eyes, “you don't get out-ofit that easily. Pedro told mala you handle a horse beter Htmn any woman he'd ever seen and better than most men. You did that de- liberately. It was your pay-off for not being chosen to bring the train into town. “Now it’s my turn, and I’m go- ing to pay you off if it’s the last | thing I do.” The hea hind her y door slammed be- Constance would have | + ses ‘0 sit down and digest onna had said, but there wa: las One pane out of her wv keep- | one vaqueros,” | eavy tied under her -chi ance slipped ou | kitehen race uP to t It was dark when she re Ped in another barn. sted . aepesa: gibet Panhy bbe? ke was now home.
