Carras was fishing for snap- per in 43 fathoms of water using a common snapper line with a hook. A terrific battle began when the warsaw took the bait. Thirty minutes later the propeller of the boat cut the line but the big fish was so exhausted that he did not make an effort to escape, merely rested near the boat until he was hauled in by the crew. The “touch system” of typ- ing calls for the use of the little fingers for shifting the type bar in order to make up- per case characters, The right thumb is delegated to do the spacing. But there is no de! inite duty assigned to the left thumb: it hangs there idle. Captain Martin observed that the litlte fingers tire and cramp under heavy duty while the left thumb loafed on the job. He resolved to do something about it, and the Martin Typewriter Speed Bar is the result. His new gadget may be at- tached to any typewriter without marring its appear- ance, he says, and he will not sell his patent rights but will make it available to every typist in the world at the lowest cost possible.
