Pandora, | 43-37 U.S. Marines gained sole pos- session of Island City Basketball League lead last night by virtue of their overwhelming 61-23 vic- tory against High School in the opener and U.S. Army’s 42-37 triumph over C.G.C. Pandora in the afterpiece. The defeat sent the Students into a second-place tie with Lions Club. School’s _ first-string players | s made a _ miserable showing against the Devil Dogs in the first three quarters, scoring only nine points. They were held to a measely field goal in the opening | period, four markers in the sec- ond and just three in the third. Coach Johnny Offutt yanked the regulars in the final quarter and sent in his second team. Disre- garding defense, the Students went on a scoring spree to bring their total up to 23 points, a gain of 14 markers, four more than were registered in the three pre- ceding periods. Highest scorer on the varsity five was second-stringer Mc- Cown, who sunk three field goals. “Flash” Arnold, another rookie, féllowed with two baskets and a charity toss. Laney, 19, and McGregor, paced the Marines. Students, who miscued five! times, netted only a trio of their 15 free shots, while the Leather- necks were successful only once in six tries.
