Congress gave President Roosevelt a blank check in the sum of $132,000,000 to spend as he sees fit. A proposal by Sen- | ator Vandenberg to create a joint commis- sion to check the operations of that fund was shouted down. It seems that in poli- thing that approaches honest busi- ness methods must be tolerated. We de- neunce dictatorships and then do the very things that create them. Former Presidential Candidate Alf. M. Lzndon put President Roosevelt on the spot when he asked to eliminate himself as a-third term candidate and thereby ad- jcurn politics to form a coalition cabinet. As was to be expected the president’s re- p 7 was negative and the poor exeuse was given that he didn’t have the time to pre- pare a pcliticel statement. It would have aken about five seconds to say, “I do not choose to run.” It is said that a poor ex- cuse is better than none, but in this case the president’s statement hasn’t even that quality, and it would have been to his in- terest to have made no reply at all. On account of the reckless spending spree of the past seven years, the national exchequer is in a deplorable ‘attenuated condition, nevertheless the billions to be spent on national preparedness for defense are justified in the light of probability. This is a more consistent move than to iguere the Johnson. Act, which forbids lending money to those nations that have defaulted in their debts to us, and lend more billions of money to the Allies, who will never and can never repay the bor- rowed sums. It 1. is an endless cycle of prosperity. i On top of this situation comes word ~ from Washington that administrative and legislative leaders are framing a broad de- velopment of naval and military activities in South Florida, including Key West. What these plans may be has not been made clear. Certainly the reports indicate substantial developments over and above the new seaplane base and the renovation of the old naval station plant. Naturaly these events are attraciing widespread attertion. Key West is _pic- tured in the national mind as a focal point in the national defense program. It _fol- lows that many investors, many oppor- tunity seekers are giving serious considera- tien to the investment and business oppor- tunities in Key West.
