Cla of ‘41 dramatists did themselves proud last night with their presentation of the sophis- ticated play cailea “June Mad”. and many, many were the ladie and gentlemen present who w reminded of their “kid puppy love affairs” as they watched and sympathized (and applauded, too) with poor, dear 15-year-old Penny Wood as she struggled through the suffreings of a pret- ty bad case of “first real lov And here’s a tip for the y West Play You say you're looking for talent to join your group. Just look over the cast of “June Mad” and pick any play- er. They are all worthy of-mem- bership in your organization. And did you know the produc- tion was totally student-man- ‘son not a mem- s play committee was behind the scenes last night Miss Ida M. Engel told the aud- ience that as she declaimed cred- it for the successful perform- ance and passed the roses over to Jack. Weech, student director. Of course, Jack hurriedly as- sured us’ that Miss Engel was responsible for the fine job turn- ed in by the cla: —but, at any rate, it wi something to know that the students were put quite on their own. And now for the orchids—no, not the ones Roger Van V: that “cosmopolite” heart-bre: er, played by Walter Malone: purchased for Julie Harris, play- ed by Magali De Leon. Sylvia Pinder takes the first bunch of orchids for a swell in- terpretation of her part. Not once did she falter in an assign- ment that demanded a_ varied technique as Penny Wood. How she did grow up—under the in- fluence of her own statement, “suffering does age one”. Jessie Watkins, as mother, was fine. portrayal of guiding her daugh- ter, and family; through the try- ing period, was excellently por- trayed. She was, indeed, a typ- ical mother. , the older From here on, the task is hard. | Supporting cast was excellent and “one simply can’t pick one out over any other one”, as Penny would say it. Here’s a try, though. Cates Roland Kecton as Penny’s doctor father, and Ray G (Gallahad) Mervyn Roberts had similar - length parts and all rated high on our Ge c as Chuck Harris, Perez, approximately score sheet. Sincerity and fine feeling was displayed by all. We've mentioned Walter Ma- loney. He portrayed the villain (or was he?) in excellent manner, even though we'd just as soon he hadn't tried to sing to his loves Of about requirements were th Mr. Harris, played by Jack horn; Milly Lou Mary Sawyer, and the aforementioned part played by sali De Leon. These support- ers of the principals turned in a of work. ie ,the maid, with her petti- coat troubles, played by Eve Val- dez; Elmer Tuttle, the would-be butler the Wood manage, played by Arthur Hollerick; and Shirley and Ralph Wentworth, played by Joan Bowen and Hen- ry Vinson ,completed the excel; lent cast. Scenery was fine. All action took place in the Wood’s living equal parts of by of room, but we didn’t mind that as (* fine- |** the ly done. Quite necessary stage sets were so ver tumes were frequent changes One point in I up was overlooked, pe! in not pro Z mustache ok, were the for 1embers of the cast.
