It will be known as the Key West branch of the Navy Wives Clubs of | America. Freliminaries in the proposal to | | make application to the national crganiza- | | tion for a local charter were discussed at a | | meeting yesterday with the blessings of | | the senior naval officers of this area. | Since the naval station was opened last November and the formation of the | | Key West patrol, a unit in the neutrality | defense program, the families of approxi- | | mately 150 naval enlisted men have moved | to Key West. Each of the feminine mem- | | bers of these families is eligible to join the ' Navy Wives club. ° The wives of the naval men do not | have it easy. They must be prepared to | move from city to city as their husbands and male relatives are shifted from post to | post and station to station in response to | the call cf duty. The wives have no oppor- | tunity tc send down their family roots | firmly into the soil of any one community. The constant moving about gives them little chance to form friendships or to pro- | | vide them with activities available to old | residents of a community. Unless they do something for themselves, help one anoth- | | er in strange places under difficult condi- | | ticns they may become discontented and | discouraged. This would be bad for the | | men of the navy. The Navy Wives club will meet this situation. They will promote American. ism, encourage friendly and sympathetic | | and help one another to be more con tented, to extend relief to needy members | and foster good fellowship and friendship | among themselves. { There is an old saying that God Helps Those Who Help Themselves. The Navy Wives Club is likely to find that in helping themselves they will help the permanent residents of Key West to help them. Many navy wives have been entertained by our citizens. They have had the free use of the American Legion clubhouse for their social gatherings. The Citizen wishes the Key West | branch of the Navy Wives clubs of Amer- ica success in all its activities, and believes | the group = deserv the unstinted co- operation of our citizens, BUSINESS WILL FIGHT An increasing number of business and industrial organizations are becoming fed up with political coercion and harassment, ; and a number of them are preparing to lic through educational campaigns de- signed to show how the country as a whole is being injured by unreasonable laws which handicap the business community. Among the organizations which will have an active part in voicing the demand | for greater freedom for private enterprise is the National Association of Manufac- | turers, whose members provide the greater | part of the nation’s industrial payrolls. The association’s president, H. W. Prentis, | Jr., recently declared: “Henceforth industry will decline to | | ‘turn the other cheek.’ It will meet un- | justified attacks with undeniable facts, | militantly and decisively.” It is undeniable that economic re- | covery has been retarded by an almost | endless succession of hostile legislative acts | which have brought hardship and be- | wilderment to business men, big and little. | | An atmosphere of fear and uncertainty | ; has heen created which has discouraged | | the investment of new capital, which is so | necessary to provide jobs for the army of unemployed. Efforts to combat and correct this situation should have the support of every citizen who is interested in his country’s economic welfare.
