Nature has given Key West a; fine site, the government has been lavish in her investments here; we must now manage those investments profitably, so as to give a good account of our stewardship, and also utilize the proffered offerings to our best advantage, otherwise all will be , to no avail. We have pursued, now. we must achieve and “learn to labor and to wait.” What is shaping up like one of the | most efficient and effective naval units | engaged in maintenance of American neu- ' trality and protection of American rights in this hemisphere is being formed at Key It is known officially as the Key West Patrol. he Patrol includes Destroyer Squad- 32 and a wing of seaplanes. Destroyer include 13 vessels, including the flagship of the com- manding officer, Capt. Arthur S. Carpen- der, U. S. N., and three divisions of four destroyers each. A few of the squadron are en route north for overhaul, while ron | three others are en route to Key West from San Diego. In a few weeks the entire squadror. will be here together under one command, This is the most respectable forma- tion of naval vessels assigned to Key West naval station in many years. It proves the importance of Key West in the naval pro- gram of national defense, and is recog- | nition of the fact that Key West has ex- cellent climatic and atmospheric condi- tions for the training of seamen and avia- tors. In accepting this honor and this op- portunity, Key West also accepts the re- sponsibility for good treatment and enter- tainment of the naval men assigned to duty In accepting that respon- ibility the city undertook to furnish a rec- reation center for servicemen at Colonial Park. That center should soon be turned over to the servicemen for their exclusive | use. Sailors and mayines enjoying shore liberty must have a central gathering place | and some decent outlet for their youthful exuberances. In accepting the responsibility for see- | ing that the naval men get good treatment, | the city undertook to discourage any at- tempt by property owners or commercial interests to gouge or discriminate against the naval men. That undertaking needs to be renewed. There is propose to put their regular summer rates merly went begging after the winter season, The Citizen urges the Chamber of Commerce and all public-spirited citizens to join in blocking any effort by property owners to charge naval men the same high | rents this summer they have been forced to put into effect this last winter. GEOGRAPHICAL NOTES Few of us know much about geo- | graphy, except in a most vague way, and this being the case a little inquiry into the | various places somewhat may il- latitude and longitude of often reveals facts which are surprising, as a few examples lustrate. We think of “sunny Italy” as a warm, southern country, yet Rome and Chicago are in exactly the same latitude. Other pairs of places of equal latitude are Paris and Quebec; Berlin and Attu Island, Alaska; New York and Istanbul (Con- stantinople) ; Florence, Italy and Toronto, Canada. Venice, famed for its canals, is in the same latitude as Montreal. In the matter of longitude, also, our casual impressions often might be found faulty. A classic example, known by this time is that the Pacific end of the Pama Canal is farther east than the | Atlantic end, owing to the peculiar curve | of the isthmus. Due to the eastward sweep of South American’s western coast, we find San- tiago, Chile, to be 200 miles farther east than New York. Reno, Nev., west than Los Angeles. Washington, D. C., is due north of Nassau, Bahama _Is- lands. A good many persons, when they first | heard of it, were surprised to learn that | Tokyo, Japan, is some 1,100 miles farther east than Manila, Philippine Islands. POLICING THE SKY Berlin reports that a French war plane recently landed in Germany, forced workmen to give them directions and es- caped to France.
