TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 1940 Z CONCHS SHATTER ARMY FIVE, 45-34 SEA FOOD GRILL FORFEITS TO DeMOLAYS; EXHIBITION AFFAIR IN OPENER By BERKY Basketball Sports Writer Last night in the High School Gym, the High School” Varsity bombarded the U. S. Army five with a score of 45 to 34. Both teams got off to a fast start and were tied at the end of the first quarter. In the second period of play, it seemed that neither team could hold the ball very long, and the quarter ended with the Soldiers holding a two-point lead. The third period saw the Army five still setting the pace, but the Conchs allowed the Soldiers only a one-point lead. In the final quarter, a_ tired Conch team came back with a fast surprise offense, shooting from ali parts of the court. The Soldiers tried hard, but the High School Varsity hung up seven- teen well-earned points before the whistle ended the game. McMahon and Nelson showed their usual hard-fighting spirit, and both played a good game with fourteen and eleven points, respectively. White and Newby were high scorers and both play- ed good ball for the losers.
