Sawyer, agent for the Internal Im- provement Fund in this county. | Study of the information so far fe- leased by the state bcdy shows that the | best of the deal. ; vertisements covering the salé, and then | are given an opportunity to meet the high- | | est bids, if their own bids should be lower, when all bids under a certain sale are | opened by the Internal Improvement Fund | Trustees at Tallahassee. | Of importance to the paying tax- | payers of the county is the fact that when the delinquent property is sold it is im- | mediately restored to the county tax roll. | Since it seems highly improbable that the | average holder of these properties is likely again to become a delinquent taxpayer, the sales should gradually restore a lot of !land to the tax roll. The present burden of taxation will be spread out over a wider number of taxpayers, thus making the total load lighter for all while giving the | county some more needed revenue. | The Citizen voices the opinion of a | large section of thé taxpaying public when it expresses the hope that néver again will | | the State Legislature and the state’s ad- | ministrative officers give delinquent tax- payers a better break than those who pay their taxes. Those who pay the tax bill should be given a break for a change. Monroe county property is becoming more valuable every day. The prospect of a running fresh water supply, an improved highway and greater activity in the city of Key West will still further enhance the value of this land. In short, there will be little excuse for the average taxpayer not meeting his tax bill. The land specula- and keep it there if there’s anything in it. Politicians are now beginning to show | their usual optimism by claiming every- | thing in sight and a few things out of | sight. When you buy toys for your own children, think of the unfortunate chil- dren who have nobody to buy any for them. Long ago John Stuart Mill said that it is hardly possible to exaggerate the mis- chief of a false philosophy; before Nazism, Communism and Fascism were even born. | Key West is looking forward to in- cfeasing tourist trade, as the fame of its attractions is spread by motortourists, who travel that wonderful Overseas Highway. | +-Times-Union. That’s the place then tor holding his property for a higher price by the pretext that he has no cash should not be coddled by our legislators, city, county or state. If the land speculator was forced to sell some of his holdings to pay taxes the paying taxpayers should not be called upon to bear an unfair portion of the load needed to make public improvements and maintain public services. Why should one man pay for improvements and _ services enhancing the value of the speculator’s land? THE STATE OF THE WAR In considering the state of the war in Europe it is well to remember that the out- standing accomplishment, to date, has been the German conquest of Poland. Al- | ready Polish prisoners are at work, assist- ing Germany to overcome the shortage of manpower, and the resources of the for- mer republie are being rapidly developed to assist the Reich in withstanding the ef- fects of the British blockade. | The second great factor in the present struggle is the slow, steady and successful operation of the blockade, instituted against German shipping. As a_ result Germany is cut off from ‘ vital supplies, particularly oil, which is necessary to the operation of any long-continued struggle. | While the blockade is not spectacular it | produces results, The third development of the situa- tion in Europe is the emergence of Russia as an imperialistic power. Taking ad- vantage of the preoccupation of Germany, the Soviet has moved rapidly to acquire a commanding position in the eastern Baltic and diplomats continue to watch for in- | dications of Russian designs in the Balkan area. “PAINFUL” ADJUSTMENTS AHEAD We regret to bring up the subject, but Mr. Isador Lubin, Commissioner. of Labor Statistics, predicts that prolongation of the European War will increasé' American | prices and bring about a “périod of pain- | ful economic adjustment in the U.
