It is well that the query was made—important that subject of a real recreation program for the youth of Key West. Other cities are way ahead in the matter of providing ; worthwhile leisure time direction for their children. There’s a two-angle feature connected with this problem of recreation. Both are along tremendously beneficial _ lines. ob A well planned program wil] go far to- wards building good character in the youth of Key West. 2. Most cities in Flor- ida combine youth recreational programs with one designed to entertain visiting tourists, In the case of feature number one, a partial program was in effect under direc- forced-vacation rule brought a virtual en- tire stoppage of any activity during the summer months just passed. Renewal of a program is promised in the near future. So much for that. Key West has yet to explore the de- sirability and benefits of a recreational winter program for tourists. A start was made last year—expansion should be at- tempted this coming season. Knowledge gained will go far in providing a_ well rounded program that can be publicized and advertised. ties for the children of our city that we are more interested. A scouting program is well under way, filling a definite need. A widening of activities to include children of all ages is much to be desired. ‘officials could provide no better service to their city than. at least a start in providing a year around recreation plan for our chil- dren. Opportunities for worthwhile em- ployment of: children’s interest are insuf- ficient. It is much too often the case that boys and girls are seen devoting = their time in types of play that are not, by any | means, of a desirable ‘nature. City-wide evidence is seen.of a huge lacking in facili- ties that should be provided to guide the ‘leisure time of our children along con- structive lines. The parents of Key West hold the key to the situation though, and it is to that group we address these summing up thoughts. If our children are to grow into good manhood and womanhood, parents must unite in a move to insist that the city gov- ‘ernment find a way to provide a city-wide recreational program. Parents must awake to their responsibility in this connection— first, to establish the program, then to see to it that their children enter into the pro- it that the children of Key Westrgreen- couraged, yes—forced to better them- selves.
