The 75 year old little Cuban lady who was one of the original founders of the institution, gray haired and wrinkled, has beeen a familiar sight in the city on her errands of mercy. County con- tributes to the support of the hospital, but Mrs. Gutsens finds that many other things are neces- sary for the well-being of the in- mates and often she gets a can of milk here, a there to give the patients what they need. Times are hard but people are still generous, Mrs. Gutsens says. Everywhere she goes she is called “Mama” by white and colored alike. She is a symbol of the care of eternal motherhood. At the hospital at present are five patients who need the care of the hospital very badly. One patient has been there nine years.
