The holiday begins Saturday evening (June 4) and celebrated for two days by Orthodox Jev for one day by Liberal Jews is il be conducted at Rev. ular services the local synagogue aby Joseph Male Sy es will be decked with green and the Ten Commandments will be read in the Syn: ervice. The gre represe! spring t festival character of the sast of Weeks while the reading > of the Decalogue is in recognition 3 of the fact that Shovuos is the traditionally associated giving of the Torah, or on Mount Sinai. which literally means s its name from the celebrated seven weeks after Passover. Greek- speaking Jews more than two tho: i years ago gave the holi- dav the name’ “Pentecost,” be cause of the fifty days countered from the second evening of Pass- over to the Shovuos festival. This holiday is one of the “three pilgrim festivals” of the Bible. In ancient times, the Jews at this season brou their offer. of first-frui d ¢ to the Temple in Jerusa agriculiural significance of holiday is also seen in the read ing of the Book of Ruth, with its cenes of husbandry and ! ting, jn the on Shovuos. The Book of Ruth is notable for the universalistic mes e in its story of the Jewess. who became the tress of the beloved figure King David When the Reform Synagogue introduced the rite of Conf! tion for Jewish youth, Pente by virtue of its traditional sociation with the ancient revela- tion, was the day selected. Through an impressive public ceremony, young boys and girls having been taught the meaning of the Jewish faith and the duty of leading a religious and moral life, confirm this faith as did their forefathers at Mount Sinai. The first confirmation service in America took place exactly ninety years ago at Temple Emanu-El of New York City. Schulsinger, president of company which proposes to ablish a fertilizer manufactur- ing plant in Key West said today that he finds that ‘matters are progressing _ satisfactorily, and they propose taking the offer to New York, leaving this after- noon. When Mr. Schulsinger and as- sociates arrived in Key West s: eral days ago, with the proposi- tion to establish a modern fer- tilizer plant, it was hard to forsee that the actual completion of all arrangements would be a matter of permanent record at this date, said Mr. Schulsinger. Such, however, is the case. “The wide awake secreta the Chamber_of Commeré Singleton, vs an outstanding factor in the almost unbelievably pid culmination of the affair. Singleton arranged the extra- ordinary meetings of the r sentative groups of the citizens of Key West, and succeeded in put- ting both the New York organ- ization and the local community on record as to what was mutually agreed upon” Mr. Schul singer Said. STRICTLY FRESH EG His readiness to aid in obtaining a suitable site, was prima facie evidence of Key West's spirit of cooperation and Mr. Schulsinger expressed himself as more than ever impressed with the great op- portunities offered here. Perhaps there may be some minor features of the agreement between Key West and the Rep- resentative Corporation of New York, which will be subject to the universal laws of proposal and counter proposal but, al! all, it is apparent that the installation of the modern plant with its at- tendant benefits, is at present a probability rather than a distant vision. Following a conference with members of the committee who were named to carry on the negotiations with Mr. Schulsinger and his associates, the New York group will, in all probability leave this afternoon for the Me- tropolis for a conference with the officials of the Mallory Line on matters pertaining to the property to be used for establishing the plant.
