There are still some folks in Key West | who think the absentee votes are counted when the canvassing board meets to certify the returns. This js not the case. In the long run the gen- | eral public will benefit in the form of serv- ices and supplies furnished a large fleet of yachts and sailing craft, just as the busi- néss and labor interests of Miami benefit- ed when her facilities were ex- panded and publicized. Fully aware of the of the men sponsoring the | | | yacht importance | their movement, Key West Yacht club are embarking on a activity to put To that | end they have appointed to handle an annual regatta, and motorboat activities and a membership campaign. .The club may also build two proas typical-of the South Sea islands and man them'with racing crews for a contest to be held during the Overseas Highway cetehgationsss | Anothe& Ym porta it matter was the de- | cision of the club to get back of the move- ment to establish a water thoroughfare from Bahia Honda to Key West. no question of the importance of such a waterway, for it would enable many of the | yachts that annually reach Miami via the inland channels to continue all the way to Key West. That would mean an increase in the business activities here besides mak- ing it a more attractive recreational cen- ter. Every year the regattas conducted by the yachting fraternity of Miami attract hundreds of boats and thousands of per- sons to that progressive community. The same can be done here with proper co- operation between the Yacht club and our public officials. Key. West} has unex- ampled harbor facilities for craft of all sizes. We probably have the finest yacht basin in all of Florida. Make it easy, attractive and reason- able for the yachtsmen and they will come here each fall and winter in ever increas- ing volume. That will make it easier for the business interests of Key West to get |-on their feet and it will mean the employ: ment of a large number of our citizens in supplying and servicing the fleet. Davis Wilson, } mayor of Philadelphia, also supported by the C. I. O., was even worse beaten for the senatorial nomination. Virtually all observers agree that this result; together with similar defeats in re- cent important municipal elections in other states, is a stunhing blow to the political ambitions of Lewis and his followers. For the immediate future, at least. it appears that support of the C. I. I. O. fared | THE KEY WEST CITIZEN KEY WEST IN" PEOPLE'S FORUM PROTEST AGAINST VANDALISM Editor, The Citizen: : Tam taking the liberty of writing in protest against a situation that most of us recognize as a disgrace to the city: of Key West. We all have noticed haw our palm trees are dying throughout the city. This blight is spreading rapidly and may soon extermin- ate the entire growth of palms on the island. The factors contribut- | ing to this devastation are of two categories: those inflicted-by Na- ture and those by Man. Considering thesnatural causes | first, the palms have been afflict- | ed for some time with a highly! contagious disease. Last year the State Plant Board, after survey-/ ing the ‘situation, recommended that all infected trees be imme-; diately cut down and burned’ and} the remaining trees treatéd with! a prophylactic spray. But nothing wa8 done about it. And since then ; se has spread and dozens | s have died, entire blocks j being on the way to destruction. |! How long will it be; one wonders, | before ‘the island is entirely bar-| ren of its chief claim to beauty | due to this inexcusable public in- difference? In regard to Man’s part in this} rape of Nature, we all know of vandals of the town—those hordes of ‘brats’ that’ swarm ‘over the planted areas, stripping the trees of nuts, fiber, and branches; in- juring the’ bud and so weakening the trees that they fall a ready| victim of the bacterial rot. They | are killing trees by the dozens and nothing is done to stop it. May I ask why? But this callous disregard for public decency is not confined to the youth of the town. Recently an entire block of fine coconut palms in the Martello Towers section was burned by a man of presumed intelligence and judg- ment just to'clear the grass off a small lot he owns. Many of those trees will probably die and those that survive will remain a charred eyesore to all. May I ask why in Kev West a man is allowed to deliberately set fire to the prop- erty Of others, an act which in other communities is a criminal effense? And how can this atti- tude be reconciled with the boast | that “Key West has always been ;a proud city”? Much money and effort has been expended in the last four years to develop Key West as a tourist resort. ‘One of the chief attractions to outsiders is the magnificent growth of palm trees and other tropical flora, much of which is found nowhere else in the United States. I wonder how many people will be interested in driving all the way down here— not to mention building homes— when the island is stripped of its palms? The recent admirable “Key West Declaration” has a false ring in view of this wanton de- struction of the city’s natural heritage. Should not our aim be} to develop and increase the beau- ty of the island instead of se) stroying it? If we are to salvage anything | from the wreckage that is now go- ing on we must act, and act Now| before it is too late. To this end I wish to submit the following proposal: That the city cooperate , with | | the State Plant Board in a'period- ic, survey of the flora of the is- land. That every diseased tree {be cut down and burned and the! healthy ones sprayed.’ "Phat .af scavenger service regularly clean j the debris from under the trees} to prevent fires and keep the} streets looking decently.
