May 4-11-18, 19; KEY WEST IN DAYS GONE BY Happenings Here Just 10 Years Ago Today As Taken From The Files of The Citizen Several hundred Shriners ar- rived in the city this afternoon! ‘and will depart for the Cuban ee this evening when the ves- sels of the P. and O. S. S. Com- pany set sail. The exact hour of departure has not been set, but it will be before midnight, was the announcement made by the company before the arrival of the train this morning. A large num- ber representing several Temples in the western part of the country came in about 11:30 o’clock and, shortly afterward another train pulled into the station with about 300 on board. Altogether it is es- timated there are more than 800 | of the Shriners in the city at the | present time. There was a large, aggregation of members from Damastus Temple, Rochester, N. Y., arriving this morning. They | however, did not stay but a brief time as they got on the Steamship Miami just as soon as they arriv- ed and departed for Havana. This party will remain in Havana. This | Monday when they plan to re-| turn. A number of the return- ing Shriners and their wives will) spend a short time in Key West. The state road department sur- veys for the Overseas bridges on) the highway from Key West to Miami will commence within the | Sarasota next few days. The surveys will cover’a period of possibly six, months and an expenditure of) approximately $20,000. This is the opinion of Engineer W. A. of the work and who is here with Engineer E. S. Fraser, making the necessary preparation for the sur- | vey and arrangements to start. Creosoted lumber will probably | be recommended for the work of | constructing the long bridges, Mr. Kratzert believes. Structures so built would be good for 15: years, and would cost from one-third to one-fourth less than bridges built of any other worthwhile material. Inspection is said to have been shown that concrete will not be good for bridges in salt water. Twenty local women’ were. sworn in as special city “police- men” last night at a meeting held for the purpose of appointing women to enforce the federal, state and city laws, relative to the trapping of birds. They will not, only arrest all persons caught! trapping or killing birds, but will release birds illegally held in cap- tivity. Round trip rates on the ferries way will be cut almost / the first 20 days in October, and it is possible that a similar cut may be tried in the very near future, with the idea that it may be adopted for the remainder of the summer. Editorial comment: The expe- | rience of that Florida man who “got called” a liar in Atlanta the other day when telling about Key West crawfish, proves that it is sometimes dangerous to tel] the truth even if one isn’t talking to Friend Wife. One of the grandest events of the post winter season will be the carnival dance to be given at the K. C. Hut this evening. Prepara- tions for one of the most delight- ful affairs ever planned have been made and there is not one little thing which would be conducive to a perfect evening of pleasure, which will be left undone.
