May 4-11-18, 19; KEY WEST IN DAYS GONE BY Happenings Here Just 10 Years Ago Today As Taken From The Files of The Citizen Several hundred Shriners ar- rived in the city this afternoon! ‘and will depart for the Cuban ee this evening when the ves- sels of the P. and O. S. S. Com- pany set sail. The exact hour of departure has not been set, but it will be before midnight, was the announcement made by the company before the arrival of the train this morning. A large num- ber representing several Temples in the western part of the country came in about 11:30 o’clock and, shortly afterward another train pulled into the station with about 300 on board. Altogether it is es- timated there are more than 800 | of the Shriners in the city at the | present time. There was a large, aggregation of members from Damastus Temple, Rochester, N. Y., arriving this morning. They | however, did not stay but a brief time as they got on the Steamship Miami just as soon as they arriv- ed and departed for Havana. This party will remain in Havana. This | Monday when they plan to re-| turn. A number of the return- ing Shriners and their wives will) spend a short time in Key West. The state road department sur- veys for the Overseas bridges on) the highway from Key West to Miami will commence within the | Sarasota next few days. The surveys will cover’a period of possibly six, months and an expenditure of) approximately $20,000. This is the opinion of Engineer W. A. of the work and who is here with Engineer E. S. Fraser, making the necessary preparation for the sur- | vey and arrangements to start.
