Lesson Tex Mark 9:30-41 Perhaps nothing makes us real- ize more fully the fact that the disciples whom Jesus had chosen were “plain, eve day human beings just like you and I than their inability to understand the things which Jesus was trying to tell the mon this journey from Caesarea Philippi through Galilee. They had accepted Jesus as the choir under ciples, If any man will come after long-promised Messiah and were thinking of him in terms of a po- litical hero and leader who would, somehow, perhaps by the display of his miraculous power, deliver them from the bonds of the Ro- mans and restore the glorv of an- cient Israel. This conception did not jibe at all with what Jesus was telling them now—that he ould “be delivered into the ands of men, and they shall kill him: and after, that he is killed, he shall rise the third day”. Is it anv wonder to vou that the disciples did not understand that saying? Under the same cireum- stances, would, you have under- stood his meaning? They could not associate their conception of a jah with the thought of sacrifice and death and resurrec- tion. To us, looking back, the meaning of Jesus’ words is as clear as light, but we have the advantage of the disciples in this respect. After the Resurrection the disciples themselves realized what Jesus had been talking about. While they were walking along the road, the disciples began ar- suing (contending) among them- selves. Jesus realized that there was a spirit of contention among them, but apparently ignored it wntil they reached Capernaum When they had established them- selves in a house, which apparent- ly they used as headquarters, Jesus asked them, “What was it that thev disputed among them- selves by the wav?” Realizing how very “little” they had been to have argued such a question among themselves while their Magier had been concerned with theliprospect of his coming death, thedisciples could not answer. hings change their aspect address to parents and students will be given by Principal E. Jones. “We, too, fret and fume, if we feel our proper place is not given to us. We grow hot and jealous about rank and position and th rest of it. But how me and petty it looks when we bring it into the presence of Jesus! 1t would do us good to bring our ambitions and desires and plans constantly into the presence of the lowly Jesus, and test them there.” It wasn’t necessary for Jes to ask what they had been dis- puting about. He already knew but he wanted them to their littleness and to teach them a lesson they needed to Iearn — a lesson of humility and service Who should be the greatest? What does it really matter if we fail to attain greatness as the world judges greatness? Our real con cern should be to attain greatnes in the eyes of God and the 0 way we can do that Is to becom as “one who serves.” In order to bring homc forcibly. the lesson of humility and unselfish service, Jesus too a litle child in his arms and de clared, “Whosoever one of such children in my, name, receiveth me: and whases shall receive me, me, but him that sent this Charles E. Erdman says, “To care for a little child or for who, like a little child, needs our sympathy, protection and guid ance, and help is really doins great thing; so great indeed. t to do so in the name of C and for the sake of Christ is reall to render the service to Christ True greatness, then, consists not in attaining the first place in the notice and praise of the world not in being served by many in being willing to step cov a humble place, not for the of self-effacement not in diffidence, but in order to others for the an us more shall rec me timic sake of Christ.” John evidently realized Jesus meant here which 1 him think of something he hee done He told Jesus that he and the other disciples had seen on casting out devils in the name of Christ and they forbade him be- cause the man was not a recog- nized follower of Christ condemned this spirit of intoler- ance in his disciples, saying. “For- bid him not; for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name (who has faith enough in Jesus to do such work) that cai | lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part.” Even the smallest act of » rendered in the name of s, and done in the spirit of humility and unselfishness, will be blessed by God, “For whoso ever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name belong to Christ, verilv I say + you, he shall not lose his reward.” Jesus becau GEMS FOR YOUR SCRAPBOOK “CHARACTER” The noblest contribution which any man can make for the bene Tit of posterity, is that of a good character.
