F. Johnson, architect, repre- senting the firm of Riley Buildets, Ine, who is in charge of the work, and Roy Jameson, superin- tendent. Mr. Johnson not only makes the plans for building and con- struction, but is instrumental in securing the loans for the work. His office is located in the lower floor, and he makes a specialty of seeuring loans for the buildings of which he is the architect. He has a number of prospects which are to be started in the near fu- ture. Boy Jameson has been a sup- erintendent of construction over a number of years, and has done work in every part of the coun- try. He will, soon after the hotel is completed, immediately start on other projects for which the plans have already been approv- ed, and loans secured. One thing which will be of in- terest to local artisans is the fact that both Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jameson always make it a rule to employ dwellers of the city in which the work is being done, ex- cept when it is impossible to se- cure competent help. At present there are 15 men working on the OLD KEY WEST house. The three-story house in which Dr. Perrine lived was built close to the water and a cellar above high water mark was under the house. When the Indians sur- rounded the place, Dr. Perrine se- creted his family in it, and then went above to parley with the Indians. A furious assault on the house, a rush up the stairs, the war whoop and maniacal yells of the savages, a single shot, and then pandemonium. The doctor was dead. But the rest of the family escaped. Captain John Mott, his wife, two children, and his mother-in- law were discovered by the In- dians at daylight. The captain and his wife were quickly shot. The oldest girl was picked up and her brains dashed out against a post. The baby was choked to death and thrown into the sea. Mott and his wife, who were in their death agonies, were dragged for fifty yards, their hair and clothes set afaire and killed with blows from clubs) The mother- in-law escaped by hiding under a burned to death. All the slaves were carried away. James Wil- wandered the streets of Key West uttering harsh cries and at times screaming “The Indians are com- ing!” All the houses were destroyed and burnt by the Indians except- ing one. On a table in this home a masonic apron was spread out and the superstitious Indians seeing the all-seeing eye and mys- tic symbol did not dare touch it. The soldiers who were at Tea Table manned a small boat to cut hotel and every one is a Key’ Wester. Mr. Browne says that job on the Old Jefferson, which is now un- der way, will have cost, when completed, about $18,000. Every phase of work which is necessary to put the building in first class condition is rapidly being done.
