We shall perhaps hear less and less of that old-fashioned talk about a balanced budget. A bald-headed man may be accused of cowardice, but never that his’ hair stands on end. Sanford will soon be 101° years old. Old man Key West had arrived at that age many years ago. One expert estimates that crime costs the United States seven billion dollars a year, And we seem to be getting what we pay for. _A bridge , expert advises. that. one ‘Should never criticize s play, but adds in the same breath that he knows he is asking too much, Bicyeles are coming back into their own, and perhaps the horse. and buggy days, will also return; at least President Roosevelt reminded us of that eventuality. Leonardo de Vinci, besides being a painter, was a sculptor, architect, musician, mechanician, engineer and. philosopher.— Exchange. And the inventor of the wheel- barrow. A Key West wag wants to know why they are called, ‘broadcasts’; since so many are narrow. We might add equally, face-. tiously if Mae West is on neyer_a complaint that the “broad.” e air there is casts aren't py: aed. sey- that he wanted thé babies when they grew up to be used as cannon fodder. ‘Recently he said so.in ,these words: “Only big families can yield big battalions with- out which no victories can.be won,” which confirms our statement, but it is somewhat incongruous that he should make the ap- peal for his “more babies” campaign among Italy’s masses to a group of bishops and priests. The public supports govern- ment action in preventing such abuses, but | it may find it hard to reconcile the anti- monopoly drive with certain other govern- mental actions of recent years. ‘_. .For example, a large number of states have passed so-called “fair trade acts,” all of which are similar in wording | and identical in purpose, and which per- mit manufacturers of trade-marked ar- ticles. to arbitrarily fix the minimum prices at which they may be sold at re- tail. The Federal government has given its . official blessing to these statutes, through the Miller-Tydings Act. What could do more to violate the spirit of the | anti-trust laws—which were passed in the interest of free and honest competition— than this? Theoretically, it. is_ perfectly possible for another manufacturer of a well-known competing product to lower his prices and thus cut into the sale of the Price-fixed product. Realistically, it considerably mre likely than many manu- facturers of similar products wili engage in “gentlemen’s agreements” whereby prices are fixed, and middleman and. re- tailer may be forced to colleet an excessive profit at the public’s expense. 4 By all means, let the government, fight combinations in restraint of trade. ‘But the }{& role of government in this drama would be} more ethical if it had not encouraged monopoly by placing the protection of the law about price-fixing. RISE OF THE TOMATO It seems a little strange to us that to- matoes were not used as human food by | the white race until only a little more than a hundred years ago, being thought poison- ous, In fact, it is related that about 1933 a New.Jersey child who had eaten a raw tomato was rushed to a doctor by her par- ents, who feared she would die. _ There were early sueprstitions con- nected with the tomato, one of which was was that they were eaten by witches, an- other that they, were effective as love po- 4 tions; in fact, they were at first known as “Ie les.” Even in recent years it has heen thought by some that eating tomatoes tended to produce cancer, but science has refuted that idea, also. ,..Now, the raising and marketing of to- matoes, both fresh and canned has become a great industry. More than 20 million cases of canned tomatoes were produced in. the United States in a recent year, in- eluding whole tomatoes, paste, pulp, sauce and juice, , » The rise of tomato juice in popularity | ‘during the last few years has been specta- | cular, increasing from an output of 165,- 251 cases in 1929 to more than five million cases last year. SERS i < tomato juice is really a love potion, it. must he. contributing very greatly to the emotional life of the present generation. WORD MEANINGS (By Benjamin DeCasseres In The Washington Herald) . Many of the words wé tise nowadays have ceased to have any meaning. 4 The word democracy, for instance, used by the Communists. Democracy means the is now | rule of the people. Communism means the rule | | of the proletariat—that is, rulership by only one | class of people, the yery lowest. Any they pur- ij pose to exterminate the middle and upper classes. j That is not democracy (which means all the peo- ' ple) but oligarchy. |_,, The. “radicals” call fundamentalist’ and con: } Stitutionalist Americans “reactionaries,” whereas | ancient, and outworn forms of social and political mon rights.of individuals. t Reactionaries are actually thus Fascists, Com- munists and Socialists. A liberal used to mean one who was opposed ‘the | to centralization and regimentation in those mat- | *7'®'= * | ters that concern the individual alone. Today | meg call, themselves “liberals” whe support every | gxackpot scheme to make the individual a parasitic growth, on the general public They now call these schemes “social legislation.” The ductionary is, however, still a good guide in_defining one word, and that is individualist. There is no mistaking what that word means.
