BY MARIB DB SYNOPSIS: Fire destroys Kay Crandon’s ranch house and barn. Neighbor Josh Hastings tries to buy her ranch and court Kay, but she hates him and is determined to rebuild. Ted Gaynor, a puncher she impulsively hired, fights Scrap Johnson, a cowhand who molested Kay. Shooting it out, they wound each other. Hastings finds them unconscious and kills Scrap with Ted’s gun. Ted crawls to a cabin where 2 girl (Marion) nurses him. The gun puts Sheriff Farley on Ted’s trail. Kay sees Ted and Marion together in the cabin, and later, delirious after a fall, babbles all. The sheriff breaks into Marion’s cabin at dawn, Chapter 34 Taken Prisoner ‘ ‘HE sheriff's eye travelled swift- ly over Marion. She waited, resolved to have him break the silence. With every herve tense, she. was determined not to say anything that could be used against Ted, or that would involve her father. She was thank- ful that she had Zeke Farley to deal with instead of Sam Cutter, whom she put down as a bully an: a brute. “Let's hear your story, now,” Zeke Farley said finally- His voice was more gentile, but none the less rm. _ “There’s not much to tell,” Ma- rion answered. “I came out early one morning to find Ted Gaynor crawling across the clearing deliri- ous and apparently dying from loss of blood. He pulled through, but it was a narrow squeak.” “Had you known Gaynor be- fore?” the sheriff asked. “I never saw him in my life be- fore,” Marion answered, looking straight into Zeke Farley’s eyes. “Humph!” was his only com- }ment, but his eyes held an un. | willing admiration for Marion's | | Straightforward manner. Twenty hits were amassed by the league-leaders, including a. perfect day by Frank Demaree, who hit four out of four and drove in four runs. New York Giants, with King Carl Hubbell on the mound, shut- out’ Philadelphia Phillies. The win was Hubbell’s sixteenth of the | year. He struck out nine batters and gave up only six bingles. | Bob Weiland went tHe route for St. Louis Cardinals and although he allowed 10 hits, Pittsburgh Pi- rates failed to score but one run which came in the seventh frame. The Gashouse Gang made better use of their 10 safe blows in put- ting over four markers. Boston Bees rode to victory over Brooklyn Dodgers on the strength of six-hit pitching by Lou Fette. Waite Hoyt limited the Bees to nine safeties. The score was 5 to 2. When all the rest failed, the lowly Philadelphia Athletics down- ed the pace-setting New York | Yankees, 4 to 3. Ross and Smitn, two young A’s hurlers, limited the powerful Yanks to three hits, one being a home run by Tény Laz- zeri with a mate on base. Ross allowed all the hits.
