Reading iitéligent books may not be the way,ta,confirm your prejudices, but it is theoway te'broaden the mind. Many of the houses of Key West are crying out loud for a coat of paint. How much more beautiful this island city would be if all the residences were freshly painted! Perhaps the most heartfelt _ con- gratulations extended to Senator Barkley upon his election as majority Senate leader were expressed by Pat Harrison, who miss- ed that fate by one vote. Almost without exception the stock- ings worn by women are flesh-colored, and | this applies to the colored women as well, } but we are curious to know what color of } stockings they get when they ask for flesh- colored. This column is inclined to believe | with Correspondent C. G. Flint that our} crime prevention technique is all wrong.} Most criminals are mentally ill their} background and education has ob- structed. This does not apply to confirmed criminals for whom there is no hope, and} to whom the Biblical injunction of an| @. for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth”,} is applicable. or been ‘eye There is raised, from time to time, a} voice’ in the land crying out against Fed- eral control of the educational system of our respective States. | A paen of praise is launched for local ; control of the tutoring of our youth and | the voice trembles with fear as to what’ might happen if Federal control becomes | a faet. When | the Federal government puts up the’ money } it claims the right to say something about how the cash shall be spent, and we don’t } blame the officials of the Federal govern-} ment, Let’s get the matter entirely straight and we won't have to be worked into a lather about Federal control. All that we have to do is to put up the money to educate our children and proceed to run our school system as we please. | POLICE. OFFICERS JEERED,, It’s probably not very important and none of out business, at that, but since at | illustrates one of the problems of law en- forcement we call your attention to an in- cident in another State. At a bazaar, operated for charity it seems that several gambling devices were openly patronized. State police , hearing about it, confiscated the machines and ar- rested the operator. The newspaper story of the affair says the police “braved the jeers of a fashionable audience.” Now, there you are! Men and women, apparently of considerable importance in the community, violate the law and the policemen who attempt to enforce it are jeered! When the people of the country want law enforcement they can get it but not by jeering at enforcement officers. Of course, there is another side to the argument, we presume. Bad laws and foolish laws remain on the books long} after.they are out of step with modern thought, affording the opportunity that fanatics seek and aiding them to nose in- ‘me: FIRST METHODIST CHURCH Joe A. Young People’s Department has to a situation for self-seeking purposes. Then when good officials are prodded in- to enforcing a foolish law they naturally get the jeers of the people. “BARREL” JUSTICE, SO-CALLED Not many days ago we read a dis- | patch, sent out by the Associated Pree i from Powhatan, Ohio, telling about “bar-; rel justice’ as practiced in that town, coupled with some praise of the use of the | strap by a marshal who for five years has given whippings to delinquent youth on the public square. The marshal estimates that 200 youths, ranging in age from 8 to 15 years, have felt the sting of his lash or paddle since his first public whipping some ave years ago. He says it is the only way ‘ e| can keep the upper hand of these osig | offenders,” .diid he may be right but we doubt it. A paragraph in the story confirms our suspicion that public whippings tend to make punishment too severe. One of the cases used to tell of the effectiveness | of the whipping method related to an out- break of “playing hookey” which resulted | in a roundup of twenty-one offenders. Then says the writer, “each was required to report each evening for a month for a strapping.” If that’s not punishment car- ried to an absurd extreme we would like | to know what would be absurd.
