THOMAS President, Clarkson College of Technology In an American Plan hotel the man- agement gives you complete accom- modations for a fixed charge. You pay the price and the place is yours for the length of your stay. For a good many years now, we have been running our affairs here in the United States on_ the American Plan. It has proven most _ satisfac- tory. As sojour- ners here, we have received more real serv- ice during the last 150 years than any peo- ple in the world ever before enjoyed. This service has been provided on the American Plan. You pay the price, and your material wants are satisfied. Satisfaction of these material wants+ is indispensable if we are to live at all. For the same price satisfaction of your cultural wants is thrown in. This is also indispensable if we are to live wisely. Perhaps because we have been run- ning our affairs on this. American plan, more people in this country have had, have new, and will enjoy more real advantages in the future than was ever true of people any- where else in the world at any time. In spite of the present depression, the average man in the United States today enjoys more than the average man in any civilization anywhere else in the world. And what are the rates for accom- mod: ns here in this American Plan For one thing, they are so reasonable that since our forefathers landed at Jamestown and Plymouth millions have lodged with us and have here lived great, serviceable, and happy lives in the deep convic- tion that the American Plan was good enough for them. Indeed, the accom- modations have been so good and rates so low that it has become neces- sary in recent years to restrict the patronage. ‘The rates for a lifetime of complete accommodations for the entire family (Address questions to the aw WILL HOLD SERVICES AT COLORED CHURCH} Rev. In our earlier ; years, the management was excellent. | Is there any evidence that this plan is as good as the European Plan—that | customers have been given a square deal and are satisfied? Plenty of it. Our own statistical evidence would | be ample to prove we have provided the most complete program of ma- terial things ever before furnished and have inaugurated the most ex- pensive cultural program ever under- taken. But it will be more convincing, perhaps, to hear what a commission © of Europeans had to say about how people fared here under our Amer- ican Plan of management. The evi- dence will at least be unbiased. And speaking of Europeans, to be j sure now and then a casual visitor, a literary gentleman from the “Old World” most likely who. prefers to deal in opinions rather than{facts be- cause opinions are more easily ar- rived at, will tell us in a paid lecture how crude we are and how little actual living we are doing! But he offers 0 statistical evidence, and since there are two or three problems ~ looming pretty large over there just now we will, for the moment, over- look the lecturers. We will pass up the shockers who try to shock us because they think we like it and turn to some facts discov- : ered by a commission of gentlemen | who came over from Europe a little while ago to make a_sympathetic | study of our American Plan to see if | not what they | they could find out, could lecture us about at so much per head, but what there is in our plan of things which might be useful to them in their own lands.
