POETIC APPEAL ON PAYMENT OF TAXES Non-payment of city taxes is the theme selected for a poetic ap- peal by one of the city’s employes, who expresses himself in doleful terms on the fate that will be his, as well as that’ of others, unless delinquents come to ‘the front. Setting forth an urgent plea for payment of the “oil” that lub- vicates the machinery. of city gov- ernment, he has paraphrased a poetic effusion from.a recent: is- sue of The Fraternal Record, thus: The rose is red, the violet blue; Your taxes are now overdue; So, pay them now; don’t: wait. till when The rose and violet bloom again. For if you-do delay them thus, No daily food will be for us. Unless you, the rose will rest Upon our empty family chest. The birds will:sing, but what of that?
