‘THURSDAY, AUGUSY 10, 1933. YOUNG RIVAL SEEKS MILWAUKEE MAYORSHIP IN RECALL MOVEMENT By ALVIN STEINKOPF tity Asnecinted Prenmt MILWAUKEE, Aug. 10.—When @ jad named Fortney Stark was i years old, a hard-hitting socialist] named Daniel Webster Hoan be- came mayor of Milwaukee. | That was 18 years ago. ! Today this same Fortney Stark,} now an energetie young man of 25, proposes to upset Hoan’s poll} tical apple-cart and the popular} notion that Milwaukee must have} a socialist mayor. He has announced himself a candidate for Mayor Hoan’s post and through an organization which! calls itself the Recall council has| begun a movement to oust the veteran executive. Pushes Reeall Move Stark must obtain 43,000 sig-; natures for his recall petitions to| reach the first step in his ambi-| tion. While the movement has been prodded vigorously, it stilt is, far from that goal. } Political observers hesitate to! predict the result of young Stark’s: campaign, for they say much has} happened in the 15 months since Mayor Hoan piled up the thump- ing majority which kept him in the city hall. Through a hundred political storms tall, sharp-featured Mayor Hoan has held fast to his office,| preaching socialism while paving streets, building sewers and fos- tering education. Year by year he grew mightier politically until @ socialist mayor and a non-par- tisan council to do him battle be- came fixtures in the Milwaukee} politiea! pieture. In his seventeenth year as, mayor Hoan was returned to of- fice in April, 1932, by the largest vote of his career. For this term Mayor Hoan dis- closed a “four year plan” to set Milwaukee right amid the jumbled economie condition of the nation. To cut wages, he said, would be to sink deeper into the mire of! the depression. Back in the days when Presi- dent Hoover was in the habit of arising early and, with several of the ranking members of his ad- ministration, tossed a ‘ medicine ball around on the White House lawn the “medicine ball cabinet” became one of the most widely known groups in the country. And later, in his campaign for re-election, three of his most} trusted advisers—-Walter Brown,| postmaster general; Pat Hurley,; secretary of war, iand Ogden Mills, secretary of the treasury—were, invariably dubbed the President’s “Three Musketeers.” And so it is with President Roosevelt. He had been in the White House only a short time; before his various groups of ad-! visers had been given queer- sounding sobriquets. Albany Knew It The “brain trust” is perhaps! the most familiar.
