I would make it a port of entry into which all foreign goods of any kind might be brought vithout payment of | duty, for inspection or for transhipment, either coastwise or to other ports. course, if the goods crossed the line and came into the rest of the United States they would pay duty.” For several years The Citizen, in a series of articles and editorials, advocated a free port or zone in Key West, as a re- sult of which a fund of $1,500 was by public subscription and a survey of the sity was made by William T. Donnelly co | determine the feasibility of establishing a port here. Mr. Donnelly came here in April, 1925, and, after the survey, issued a pamphlet demonstrating beyond ques- | tion the practicability of the project. It is difficult to conceive offhand the great measure of progress that would oc- cur in Key West were it made into a free bport. As it is the nearest port to Cuba, ‘Caribbean countries, the Panama Canal,j and Central and South America on the At- lantic, shiploads of goods for prospective marketing in the United States would be brought here, and hundreds of buyers swould come to Key West to inspect the .goods. Scores of warehouses and display rooms would be constructed, and Key West would not only regain but far exceed the greatest importance it has ever . at- :tained as a port of entry. Making Key West a free port, may seem to some beyond our attainment, but such is not the case. Unquestionably, it is ta project of far-reaching importance, but .great as well as minor projects are attained in only one way: by concerted, determined efforts. And sometimes great things, in ‘point of importance, are easier, to get than -small things. : “Faith that moves*mountains” is” as Pnecessary in the success of a city-as it is in the success of an individual. The city that sweeps along with the current eventually finds itself in the same position as the man who “takes things as they come,’ who makes no effort to better his condition. The time for Key West to be easy- going has come to an end if we are de- termined, as we now seein to be, to pros- .per and progress. The Citizen believes rthat if our leaders, backed as a unit by the moral force of the city, put forth as much determined effort to get a free port as they have to obtain a loan to construct the pro- posed long bridges, success will be their} reward. With a democratic administration 'coming into power next March 4, the time ;will be opportune to appeal to the sena- tors and representatives from: Florida to favor and urge legislation that will make this city a free “aan WALL STREET Under the present circumstances, what ; is the outlook for an upward movement in | the securities market?
