S. Coast Guard in Key West to commemorate the 136ih anniversary of the Coast Guard. Appropriate exercises are being rendered by the members of the Coast Guard force here in honor of the day. Coast Guard History Af:er freedom of the American j colonies had been won through the War of the Revolution, the Continental Navy was disbanded. | There was no sea force available |for the protection of the coasts and maritime interests of the new- ly ‘constituted United States until the organization of the Revenue Cutter Service on August 4, 1790, under an act of the First Congress, approved by President Washing- ton. By the first of November, 1791, ten vessels were ready for duty, and during a period of six years and eleven months the rev- enue cuiters formed the only armed force afloat belonging to the young Republic, and were en- gaged in patrolling the coast line ef the country and enforcing its maritime laws. The first commiss‘cn ‘granted | by President Washing.on to any officer aflont: was ‘issued to Cap- tain Hopley -Yeaton, of New Hampshire, in the United States Revenue Cutter Service (now Coast Guard). The Revenue Cutter Service re- mained a separate organization until January 28, 1915, when Congress created the Coast Guard by combining therein the former Revenue Cutter Service and the } former Life Saving Service. As the Life Saving Service, whose his'ory dates back to 1848, was established by Congress for the preservation of: life and property and was one of the principal func- j tions of the Revenue Cutter Serv- ice was to perform similar duties on the seas, 4he two services ne- cessarily cooperated with and sup- plemented each other to a con- siderable extent in this work of conservaiion. It became _ appar- ent that closer coordination and inereased efficiency would result from the union of both services into one organization. This was accomplished by the act of Con- gress approved January 28, 1915, | creating ‘he Coast Guard and con- | stituting it a part of the military forces of the United States, op- eraiing under the Treasury De- partment in time of peace, and as a part of the Navy in time of war, or when the President shall so from shipwreck along the coast, | THE KEY WEST SHOWER GIVEN GRAND SUCGESS AFFAIR TAKES ne’ AT PARISH HALL UNDER AU- SPICES OF WOMAN'S GUILD OF ST.
