eeececaseoee STRAND TODAY Condor Villian In Rin-Tin-Tin Film In Warner Bros.’ production of “The Night Cry,” starring Rin- Tim-Tin and featuring June Mar- lowe and John Harron, Bozo, the enly California condor in ecaptivi- ty in America, portrays the role of the villian. This picture shows at the Strand Theatre to- day. He weighs 46 Ibs., has a wing- spread of 102”. and belongs to the largest species of bird in the} world. A hundred years ago the California condor was a common sight from the mountains of Low- er California to those of Wash- ington, but now only a few of the great birds of prey. are left in Southern and Lower California, where they are threatened with extinction. The fact that a pair of Califor- nla condors raise only one bird in ®@ nesting period of six months, which may.oceur only once every two to four years, is one of the greatest reasons why they are so scare. Te quote from the National Geographic Magazine of August, 1923, however, “the main cause for the decrease in condor num- bers seems to be that when stock-! taising became common in Cali- fornia years ago, in order to se- eure pasturage during the dry months, the rangers were com- pelled te drive their herds back into the more remote mountain- ous parts. Here they invaded the retreats of panthers, grizzlies and coyotes. These preyed upon calves and sheep. The quickest and best device for getting rid of these animals was by baiting the carcasses with poison. Since condors came to feed on the car- easses, many of these birds were killed in this way.” As long as they killed their own prey, which they carried to their mountain fastness, they were safe, but when they yielded to the temptation of feeding on the car- rion whigh these predatory ani- mals left, they sealed their own doom. Herman Raymaker. directed “The Night Cry,” based on the story by Phil Klein and Edward Meagher. TOMORROW ‘ “Thank You” Will. ; Make You Laagh A rural drama with pathos and hkamef perfectly blended is “Thank You,” the William Fox pieture adapted from the John Golden stage play whigh shows at the Strand Theatre tomorrow. “Thank You” ranks with “The Old Homestead,” “Way Down Bast” and other classic dramas of the viflage-life variety that are so to the American heart. plot revolves around a emalltown New England _ pastor whe is forced, because of his in- adequate arlary, to accept the left-over viands arid an occasional seuttie of coal from his parishion- ers. And all he can offer in pay- ment is to say, with his most courtly manner: “Thank You!” There is a love story running parallel to the other, adding the glamor of romance to the patho: the pastor’s characterization.
