THE KEY WEST CITIZEN AMERICAN EXPANSION One hundred and fifty years ago on July | Fourth of this year, when the American republic | was born, and for quite a number of years follow- ing that date, the idea commonly prevailed that it was very doubtful if this country would ever ex- tend into the wilderness then “existing west of the Allegheny mountains. A great crisis came in the history . of this country, when the question arose whether we would buy the territory known as Louisiana, which in- cluded most of the lands between the Mississippi river and the Rocky Mountains, except the state of Texas. : When this vast territory was bought in the administration of President Jefferson, for $15,- 000,000, perhaps the most important step toward America’s greatness was taken. That vast terri- tory, including the \rich states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, the two Da- kotas, Montana, and much of Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma, was obtained at a cost of two and a half cents an acre. It had previously been doubted, even if the vast territory of the central and western part of the country were ever populated by the white race, whether it would be possible for one govern- ment to control so vast an extent. It was an act of superb faith when the old forefathers decided that they were going to have this vast territory and settle and colonize it. If they had allowed this chance to obtain this great domain to go by, it might quite likely have grown up a foreign country, wars.might have oc- curred between those people aad the original United States, development would have been hin- dered, and our condition would be far inferior to what it is today. The people owe an incalculable debt to the far sight of the founders of the nation, for their action on this question. ROYAL ESTATES SAVED Temporarily, at least, the lands, palaces and castles of the former Kaiser and German prince have been saved from entire confiscation at the hands of the present government of the German Republic, through the failure to secure sufficient popular votes for a bill providing such confiscation, in a referendum held on June 20. In order to pass the law it was necessary that 20,000,000 votes in its favor should be cast, while the count showed only approximately 14,889,000 for the measure. Only about 540,000 voted against the law, but this was not particularly significant owing to the peculiar provision that an affirmative majority of all qualjfied voters? was Arequired, whether, they voted or not. The result of the referendum does not mean, however, that the former rulers are to retain their property intact. Many who did not vote for abso- lute confiscation are in favor of holding a large part of these lands and their appurtenances for the public use. The next step will be to arrange a compromise measure, whereby the state will re- tain a part of these properties. Such a measure would undoubtedly be just. It is unreasonable that the former rulers, whose folly brought such a calamity upon the German people, should continue to fully enjoy the vast fortunes | accumulated at the expense of their former sub- jects. As a manifesto of the Center Party puts it, “the consequences of a lost war and impove: - ment must be borne by the princes along with others.” WOMEN AND NEW CLOTHES The clothing specialist of the Texas Agricul- tural and Mechanical college thinks that “clothes make women feel more comfortable and | self possessed and that they act as a physical tonic. She thinks that much of the self consciousness and awkwardnes which many women feel comes from the feeling that their clothes are not right.
