FRIDAY, JUNE.25, 1926 PAGE THRER GIANTS TAKE DOUBLE HEADER ON THURSDAY WASHINGTON AMERICANS | AND NEW YORK NATIONALS START DRIVES OF MUCH SIGNIFICANCE OCIATED PRESS HEAD-} QUARTERS, June 25.—As July, the month that often decides base- bell champions, the New York Yankees are far in the van ir the American League, while Pittsburgh Cineinnati are fighting for honors in ihe National. Usually the teams leading on July 1 have captured the pennants. One notable exception was the great Boston Braves drive of 1914 which took them from last place at the opening of July to a world championship in October. Washington in the American, and New York in the National, favorites before the season start- ed, are down in the seéond divi- but yesterday started drives which may mean something. The Giants captured a double header by slugging the offerings of Philadelphia pitchers to every cor- ner of the Polo Grounds. They piled up 17 safe hits to win the first encounter, 12 to 7, and reg- istered 12 blows to make the sec- ond, 7 to 2. Knight, moundsman for the Phillies, made two homers, but his pitching failed to match his batting. Pitisburgh was in haste to catch a train out of St. Louis, and the Cardinals hammered over three runs to tie the count in the eighth. The game ended with the ninih, 3 te 3, by agreement. Washington got a double header over Philadelphia, 8 to 6 and 3 to 1, the second game being called in the sixth on aceount of rain. The Senators registered a triple play in the second game. The Yankees, with only six hits, carried Boston to 11 innings he- fore admitting defeat, 6 to 5. Lazzeri of the Yankees enjoyed a home run, triple and single for half of his team’s hivs. Chicago gained a game on the Yankees, and at the same time secured its hold on second place by beating Cleveland, 9 to 6, Falk's hit into the stands account- ing for three of the tallies, approaches, and sedes BASEBAL YESTERDAY'S RESULTS 2 J FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE Sanford, 13; Tampa, 2. The one in the Knowles estab- lishment burned a small place in the floor, doing practically no damage. The fire in the corner |ctructure was discovered by Clyde Knight, who phoned the fire de- partment and the incipient blaze was quickly quenched. The Rah- ner bookstore building is said to |have been left with doors unlock- | jed for some time, and it is sup- |posed that some one had entered |the building and dropped a lighted ‘cigarette in the rubbish on the |floor.
