PAGE EIGHT CONFESSES TO POISONING OWING T0 JEALOUSY JESSE ODOM ADMITS HE CAUSED DEATH OF ARCHIE ALEXANDER AT PENSA- COLA, FLA., RECENTLY (Dy Associated Press) PENSACOLA, Fla., June 23.— Jesse Odom, 19, today admitted he caused the death of Archie Alex- ander, 16, by giving the younger boy ‘a drink of poisonous liquor because of his jealousy of Alex- ander. Odom pleaded guilty to second degree murder in circuit court and was sentenced to life in prison, Witnesses appeared to testify that Odom was jealous of Alexan- der because of his popularity with the girls at the expense of Odom. The defendant admitted his jeal- ousy, but claimed the liquor was poisoned by some unknown per- son. In sentencing Odom, Judge A. G. Campbell declared that only the plea offered by Odom prevent- ed his going to the electric chair. “And,” the judge said, “there is nothing to recommend you to the pardon board, therefore, you must spend the rest of your natural life in the penal service of the state. “In some cases where a plea of second degree murder is offered, there is some justification for of- fenses committed, or some excuse, but this was one of the most de- jiberate and most premeditated murders I have ever known in my service on the bench.” * Odom stood quietly at the bar ‘and showed no signs of emotion ‘as “sentence was pronounced. - E _ TS GREETED ON ARRIVAL LIEUT.
