WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23, 1926 eoeees BD: 2006 STRA TODAY This Actress Wants Action, Not Sympathy One of the first things the av-| erage actress asks when she is} offered a part in motion pictures} is: “Will the character get sym-)| pathy?” But Margaret Living- sion, who plays the highly dram-| atic role ef Violet Deering in the William Fox sereen version of | “Havoc” which shows today at the Strand Theatre, is not the! average actress. She is far abéve| the average. | Sympathy on the screen means| no.hing in the young life of } j Livingston. What she wants is} high-powered parts which call for| hietrionie ability. If they get the} much-desired sympathy, well and good; if they don’t, well and good anyway. | “I have done the best work of| my career in the adventuress type of parts,” said Miss Livingston re- cently in discussing the subject.| “The Chorus Lady’ was one of! these. I have never gotten sym-| pathy in my paris, but I found I) did get attention. And that, in} the long run, is what counts. I want parts which will be noticed} by the audience. Love interest} must be in the picture, but I don’t care whether I have it or not. I want to act and if I get the chance to act in a picture, whether I’m an! adventuress, bad woman or what, Vl be satisfied. ¢ “My part in ‘Havoc’ is that of a cold, coddled girl of English so- ciety who plays with men’s hearts and breaks them just as she might break and discard toys of which she was tired. The audience will] not like this girl Violet Deering, but they certainly will notice her. If they do that I will be pleased.” Others in the “Havoc” cast are George O’Brien, Madge Bellamy, Walier McGrail, David Butler, Harvey Clark, Wade Boteler, Edythe Chapman, Eulalie Jensen, Leslie Fenton and Bertram Grass- by. The picture is from the stage success of the same name. It was directed by Royland V. Lee and adapted by Edmund Goulding. TOMORROW “Hands Up!” Newest Ray Griffith Vehicle The thrilling adventures of Raymond Griffith as a rollicking, earefree Confederate spy and 2 member of General Robert E. Lee's staff, ending with his effort to find a way out of his greatest, quandary, that of deciding be- tween the loves of two beautiful girls—these are the highlights of the silk hat comedian’s newest starring picture for Paramount, “Hands Up!” The story begins in spirited fashion when General Lee dis- patehes Griffith to Nevada to at-| tempt to divert to the south the supply of gold from the fabulous- ly rich “Molly” mine which has been the source of the Union's fi- nancial strength. Griffith meets the Union agent, Montagu Love, and the owner of | the mine, Mack Swain, while| traveling westward on the stage coach. He also meets * Swain’s beautiful nieces, Marion Nixon and Virginia Lee Corbin, and| promptly falls in love with both.| Griffith wins the confidence of Swain and is made superintendent | of the mine. However, his dup- lieity is discovered and the towns- people are about to hang him when Miss Nixon and Miss Corbin save him. | His subsequent experiences in} getting the gold through to the | Confederate army only to discover that the war is over, and the out-| come of his romance with the two girls are amusingly set forth and vividly depicted. | Besides those players already | mentioned, the cast includes sev-| eral prominent actors who portray | the historical characters that en-| ter into the background of the stery. George Billings appears as “Abraham Lincoln,” Noble John-| son as “Sitting Bull” and Charles K. French as “Brigham Young.” | “Hands Up!" was directed by Clarence Badger from the screen | adaptation by Monty Brice and! Lioyd Corrigan of the original story by Reginald Morris.
