SEARS Has Been to Key West During the Twelve Years He Has : Represented This District in Congress ees o8 \ Individually and as a community he has never failed to doa favor for a Key Wester or Key West. He worked hard to have our harbor improved, and succeeded; he worked hard to get us our submarine base, and succeeded; he worked hard, from an army, a navy anda civic view- point, to help us, and he succeeded. His work, in behalf of Key West, was supplemented in the senate by Senator Fletcher. Mr. Sears will continue to work hard for us. Since 1913, when the federal government purchased the site at Caroline and Simonton streets, he has been working hard to get us an- other public building. The sole reason for his not. succeeding in getting us that building is be- cause the United States government has not erected a single public building anywhere in the country since that time. In the matter of public buildings the government has been following a policy of retrench- ment. But—Key Westers may rest assured that when the government resumes the construc- tion of public buildings Mr. Sears will see to it that we will get ours. AS A MATTER OF FACT, Mr. Sears and other representatives from various parts of the country havé been given the assurance that the first public buildings to be erected will be on sites that the government bought before the beginning of the world war. Key West will be among the first cities that will get their buildings. The treasury depart- - ment has already transferred to the department of commerce, under which the bureau of light- houses is operated, the land in the back of the Key West postoffice for the use of the lighthouse department for the seventh district, the headquarters of which is in Key West. Furthermore, the same law that authorized that transfer also provides that the postof- fice building be turned over to the lighthouse department here as soon as the proposed new building is completed.
