PAGE EIGHT THE KEY WEST CITIZEN PLANS CONVERTING |PLAN RETURNING SATURDAY, MAY 1, 1926. KILLS OSTRICH BETTER GARDENS CONTESTS TO BE CONDUCTED HERE CONTEST TO BE PUT ON, UNDER AUSPICES OF WO.) MAN’S CLUB; PRIZES TO BE AWARDED It is highly desirable that every family in the city be represented inthe Better Gardens Contest which is to be conducted under the auspices of the Woman’s Club; otherwise, the possibility of a city-wide beautification program will not be made possible. Under the provisions of the contest, any person in Key. West possessing a plot of ground, no matter how mengre, is eligible. The only re- quirement being made is a notifi- cation to the Chamber of Cora- merce, telephone 599, that he or she ‘wishes to become an entrant. Prizes are to be awarded accord- ing to beauty and general appear- ance, a first and second prize to be given on that detail, and a third prize will be presented to the plot or garden showing the greatest improvement; under this last classification, the most humble home in Key West has an oppor- tunity to compete, since all plots or gardens will be inspected upon entrance by a committee from the Woman's Club and any improve- ment made will he considered in the awarding of the third prize. rises for each classification are fitst, $60; second, $25; third, $f%. Points are distributed among a Humber of horticultural details, and are proportioned as follows: “Géneral Appearance and Beauty—50 per cent. Flowers—4 per cent. Color Effects—4 per cent. Grass—4 per cent. New Species—-4 per cent.+ 7 per cent, Hedges—4 per cent. Tropical Effects—4 per cent. nes——4 per cent, Vegetable Gardens—4 per cent. Fruit Trees—4 per cent. Novel Features, such as sun- dials, bird-baths, water gardens, ete.—10 per cent. Col. Robert G. Thompson has made it possible to conduct this contest, by a generous donation of $100 to be awarded as prizes. His idea in doing this was to en- courage every family in Key West. to improve their surroundings with flowers, grass and shrubs, not in a hodge-podge effect, but with some regard for color com- binations, and regularity. The ideal development of even the smalicst plot, is not to dot its sur- face with rose-bushes, beautiful although the blossoms may be, but to, £ontrive a lawn, with flowers and shrubbery massed against the porch, or house, defining the edge of the lot with hedges, or trees, or snrubbery, as they decide, Pet- ted flowers are lovely, and where it is difficult to dig into the ground the only means of beau- tification; nevertheless, a mis- eellancous array of flowers, usual- ly a single plant of a variety plant- ed in a bucket of one size; another variety in a paint-can, and yet another in an old kettle, does not make for real beauty, though of course, it is an improvement over a@ bare space. If it were possible to get every citizen to beautify their home plots with a bit of lawn, a bed of flowers along walks, and around the edges of the house, a couple of fruit trees in thé rear, and a shade tree at the corner of. the lot, the succession of lawns, uniform flower beds and shrubbery would lend the city a air of symmetry and beauty it does not possess. The Woman's Club committee will be glad to confer or to assist in planning gardens for any one in Key West who desires to enter the contest, but hesitates for lack of adequate knowledge. A few cents worth of seed, an intelli- gent idea of the possibilities of ote’s yard, and the expenditure of a little cnergy can make Key West a city of flowering beauty} that will not only attract visite but will make them want to live} here. Won't everyone make an} @ffort to better the appearance; During the campaign I will make | ___ ; think there was criminal intent in IN BOSTON 200, _ MAN FINED $20 DRUNK FOUND GUILTY OF TRESPASS BUT IS SET FREE ON CHARGE OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS / BOSTON, Mass., May 1.— Charles A. Dana, founder of The New York Sun, used to tell his cub reporters: “If a dog bites a man, that’s not news. but if a man bites! a dog, go get it!” Here is a true animal story. A man killed an ostrich in thé camel house of the Franklin Park Zoo- logical Gardens here. The leading figures in this piece of information would have made a real news story either way, The man who slew the ostrich was fined $20 for trespass in Rox- bury Court by Judge Perrins. The ostrich weighed 250 pounds, was worth $500 and he was a proud and haughty bird. William C. McIntyre, whos home is on Colum- bus Avenue, was arrested on a charge of cruelty to animals. He was further charged with breaking and entering, and with trespass. On the first two. charges he was found not guilty. On the trespass charge he was fined. The court said it was obvious McIntyre was “on a spree” and wandered into Franklin park look- ing for shelter for the night and from the rain, He scaled the fence by the camel house and en- tered the building. Judge Perrins stated he did not this act, but that McIntyre wanted to get in somewhere and “sleep it off.” Under the circumstances the cruelty was also unintentional, Judge Perrins indicated. He reviewed the evidence and said McIntyre sauntered into the stall where, unfortunately, the os- trich was quartered, as he was too ferocious to remain with his brothers in the ostrich pen. It was dark in the stall.and McIntyre, according to his own testimony, felt something strike him with a vengeance, which started a fracas that will live long in the chronicle of zoo happenings, Completely unaware of what sort of strange creature beset him, McIntyre fought desperately in the dark, finally obtaining a hold on the ostrich’s neck. For a long time the ill-matched pair (McIntyre weighed 120 pounds) fought a battle to the death. The ostrich succumbed to his foe’s beating and “McIntyre, still without knowledge of what he had fought, fled from the camel ouse. Under such circumstance, Judge Perrins said it was evident that the “cruelty” was rather more self- protection than anything else, so McIntyre was found not guilty of the charge. Just before he was to appear in court. MeIntyre told a reporter: “Tll never indulge again.” DEMOCRATIC VOTERS OF. THE TWENTY-FOURTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF FLORIDA I wish to announce my. candi- dacy for re-election to the Flor- ida State Senate from the Twen- ty-fourth district, subject to the Democratic primary.
