FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1926. I } INVESTIGATION IN DEATH OF CONVICT | STILL CONTINUES AUTHORITIES AWAIT OFFICIAL REPORT OF CORONER’S JURY WHICH VIEWED BODY YES- TERDAY (Ry Associated Press) TUSCUMBIA, Ala., Feb. 18.—In- vestigation of the death of Hoote Taylor, convict, shifted back to Tus- cumbia today, where authorities awaited the official report of the coroner’s jury which yesterday view- ed the body of Taylor when h's grave ‘was opened at Town Creek. The body also was examined by a physi- cian. In its report to Coroner W. F. Ricks, the jury said bruises and cuts were discovered on Taylor’s body, and although the charge that these blows produced death was avoided, the find- ings of the jury are declared to be in sharp contrast to the official re- port filed with the prison board sett- ing forth that the prisoner died of heart trouble. It was said this morning that At- torney General Harwel G. Davis, who is conducting an investigation into the death of James Knox, who also’ died at Flat Top Prison, will be asked to take a hand in the Taylor case. Charges by J. Y. Taylor, aged father of Hoote Taylor, that his son was clubbed to death by two negro trusties, led to the present investiga- tion. The elder Taylor directed the exhumation of his son’s body, and saw in the bruises partial substantia- tion of his charges. He had made formal demand that the jury’s report be made the basis of further investi- gation and grand jury action. It was also indicated this morning that the findings of the coroner’s jury would be placed in the hands of prosecuting officials. The report was to have been submitted to Justice of Peace J. A. Almon, and delivered to the sheriff last night. The jury found that Taylor's left, jaw was larger than his right, and that six bruises or cuts were notice- able on various parts of his body. Several of the marks ,still. were bloodshot, it was declared, indicating that the blows caused the flow of blood when they were dealt. - Taylor, died at Flat Top Mine last November 21. He was convicted of second de- gree murder in Colbert county, Oc- ; tober 31, 1925, and sentenced to ten years. He was 39 years old at the time. a e .
