A visit to the Pio- neer Store will convince you of this. JOHN BECKFELT THE PIONEER STORE : An Ancient English Workhou: In the records of St. Thomas’ hospi tal, London, is an entry of the year 1570 to the effect that “in considera tion of the hote tyme of the yere” the poor be allowed “every one a day three pyntts of Bere for two months,” a | qnart at dinner and a pint at supper. and at the end of two months return to “there olde ordinary allowance. which is one quarte.”’ The food at thgs ancient workhouse was to be deait with as liberally as the drink. The ai- moner and steward were to “bye no byffe but of the best, without bones and in speciall without the marybon, and none other to be bowght.” Figure It Out. A man had sixty ducks for sale and divided them into two lots of thirty each. One lot was to be disposed of at three for $1 and the other at two for $1. In his absence his clerk sold the sixty ducks at five for $2, realizing the sum of $24. If sold according to instructions one purchaser would have got thirty ducks for $15 and the other thirty for $10, making $25 for the lot. What became of the missing dollar? A Modest Violet. “I have about furnished my house,” said the eminent actress. “How about pictures?” “I have enough of myself to fill the parlor and the reception hall. I s’pose I'll have to have some more taken for the other rooms.”—Louisville Courier- Journal. A Matter For a Higher Court, “I don’t understand why Matilda has sued me, judge,” protested the defend- ant in a recent breach of promise suit. “I only did the asking, while she did the promising.”—Judge’s Library.
