BEDE IS WILLING TO BE CANDIDATE Should James A. Tawney, not make the race for congressman at large, J. Adam Bede of Pine City may jump in. Mr. Bede so declared in St. Paul the other day. The former congress- man was on the way home from a lecturing tour. The possibility of the Pine City statesman running for congress was mentioned recently by Frank Eddy of Sauk Centre. While the Eighth district turned Bede down when he made the race for re-election a few years ago, Mr. Eddy declared that Bede had sufficient following through out the state to make him a strong contender for the honors. “Should there be sufficient demand, I may make the race,” Mr. Bede said. “Personally, Iam for Tawney and am willing to do all I can to return him. I believe he can be elected if he runs at large. He is the strong- est man Minnesota has ever sent to the house and valuable to the na- tion as a member of the appropria- tion committee.” J. Adam Bede voiced his opinion of the president’s veto of bills recently put up to him, and likewise com- mented upon the reciprocity treaty. A close friend of President Taft and allied with the “regulars,” Mr. Bede naturally approves the presi- dent’s veto of the wool bill and the free list. the fight for reciprocity. Mr. Bede believes the tariff on wool should be substantially lowered, but he wants the report of the tariff commission made public before congress takes ac- tion one way or another. “It might interest you to know,” he continued, “that there is not enough wool grown jn all the world to provide one suit per year for ev- ery American citizen. I doubt much if there is sufficient wool to make a suit of underclothing for each one. So we are not so greatly in need of protection on wool imports. There are other commodities much more important.” Mr. Bede is enthusiastic over reci- procity. The principle is right, he said: “The treaty is subject ta recall,” he continued. “If it’s wrong, we can reverse it. If not, we've made a good deal with Canada.” Wachtel and Hansen, the Art Tail- ors. 277 APPLICATION FOR HOMESTEADS Lester Bartlett, register, and E. B. Wood, receiver, of the United States land office at Cass Lake have just closed their books for the month of August and it appeared that 277 applications were received from the 22nd of August, the day of opening of Chippewa Indian lands, to the end of the month. Thirty three thousand acres of the 82,000 opened to entry on the 22nd inst. have been segreg- ated as a result of such application. Of the balance of the land not taken up at this time the greater portion lies in Koochiching county and too swampy for practical home- steading. However conditjons will not remain in this manner much longer as Koochiching county has several immense drainage projects in view at the present time which when completed will drain all the swamp land and as a result this swamp land will be homesteaded with a rush.
