Washington, June 6.—The senate finance committee resumed hearings on the Canadian reciprocity bill, Her man Ridder, until recently president of the American Newspaper Publish- ers’ association, being called to the witness chair. Mr. Ridder had not proceeded far when Senator Porter J. MéCumber of North Dakota startled |@84ND RAPIDS the committee by challenging one of his statements ag an “absolutely false- hood.” Mr. Ridder had made the statement that the newspapers of the country and the publishers’ association had not attempted to suppress facts or to color stories sent from Washington | on the subject of reciprocity, when Senator McCumber interrupted with his charge of falsehood, Several senators insisted that Mr. McCumber’s remarks should be strick- en from the record. Senator McCumber agreed to have his remark changed s0 as to make it read that what Mr. Ridder said was “unfounded.” GRAFT INDICTMENTS NOLLED Men Involved in Pittsburg’s Council- manic Graft Go Free. Pittsburg,’ June 3—The © further prosecution of the councilmanic graft cases was abandoned formally when Judges R. S. Frazer, John D. Shafer and John C. Haymaker, in quarter sessions court, granted a nolle prosse of all the remaining indictments, six- ty-two in number, excepting those against County Delinquent Tax Collec- tor Max G. Leslie and former Presi- dent of Common Council William Brand. The latter is serving a term | in the Western penitentiary. EXPLOSION KILLS GARRISON Hundred and Fifty Nicaraguan Sol- diers Lose Lives, San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua, June 2.—The fortress Las Lomas, on Tisca- | pa hill, Managua, was blown up. -One hundred and fifty soldiers perished in the explosion. All the ammunition in the fortress was destroyed. The cause of the explosion is as yet unknown. Strict cable censorship has been es- tablished from Managua. |TO ATTACK COTTON TARIFF Representative Rainey Says Revision Bill Will Soon Be Drafted. Washington, June 6.—Revision of the cotton tariff will be undertaken at this session of congress, according to Representative Rainey of Illinois, chairman of the subcommittee of the ways and means committee investi- gating the cotton schedules. Experts already are at work and a bill will be drafted in the near future. BREN {S RELEASED ON BAIL Accused Treasurer of State University Appears in Court. Joseph D. Bren, treasurer and ac- countant of the University of Minne- sota, was arraigned in police court at Minneapolis to answer to a charge of grand larceny. He waived examina- tion and was bound over to the grand jury on $2,500 bonds. The bonds had been arranged for in advance and Bren walked out of the courtroom at liberty less than ten minutes after he had been brought from his cell. Examination of the records, securi- ties, certificates and cash contained in the university vault and Bren’s pri- vate safe deposit box in the North- western National bank revealed con- tents tallying, except in minor details, to the list given to Deputy Public Ex- aminer F. N. Stacy by Bren. Boy Wrestler’s Neck Broken. Louis Plucinnik of Winona, six- teen years of age, had his neck broken while engaged in friendly wrestling with Bilecki, a boy two years older, who secured a half nel- son hold. Plucinnik is paralyzed from the neck down and his condition has been growing worse steadily so that attending physicians do not think he will long survive. MORTGAGE TAX IS $60,070 Great Norttern Pays on $45,000,000 Property in Minnesota. The state of Minnesota, through the plan of James J. Hill to issue $60v,- 000,000 bonds by the Great Northern railroad, received as its share of the deal $60,070, the amount of mortgage registry tax due the state for filing the trust deed. 5 The instrument, which was filed with the secretary of state by the Great Northern, covers 123 printed pages and in effect reports the pro ceedings of the board of directors of the railroad company held in St. Paul May 25, which authorized the issue of bonds payable in gold coin and to ma- ture June 1, 1961.
