Every barbershop in town will be Henry Logan and George LeFey went to Duluth on business, Friday. Dr. John Dickie of Coleraine was a Grand Rapids visitor, Monday. Mr, and Mr. P. J. Billedeau were visitors at Deer River Sunday. Mrs. Everett of Deer River spent Friday at the Mrs. A. L. Strain home. Assistant Attorney General Hilton of St. Paul was in the city on busi- nes, Friday. LOST—A sum of money, finder wil) receive reward by returning it to Rey E. S. Murphy. There will. be no services at the Episcopal church on Sunday July 4th, owing to the absence of the pastor. Hugh McEwen and A. E. LeFebre, left Monday morning for Hibbing on important business and will return to- morrow. M. McAlpine and sons, Frank and Russell, went to Cass Lake Thursday afternoon to be in attendance at the fireman’s tournament. Mr. and Mrs. Rev. Davies are the happy parents of a seven and one- half pound daughter, who arrived at their home last Friday. The petit jury was discharged Monday, and on Monday, July 12th, Judge McClenahan will close court here and go to International Falls. Miss Ina Thornton, who is employ- ed as a stenographer in County At- tarney Price’s office, spent Thursday with friends at Bovey and Coleraine. Mesdames MeVicar and Grove de- parted for Seattle Friday, where they will take in the exposition, They will also visit at other points in the west and will be gone about two months. Mrs, B. P, Munson and two child- dren of Minneapolis arrived Thursday and will spend a few days at the Ogema, on Pokegama lake Mrs. Munson is a sister of Mrs. W. P. Nisbett. A. M. Shaw, an old-time resident here, but now of Fort Francis, where he has charge of the estimating of the amount of timber to be cut for the Rainy River Lumber company, arriv- ed here Thursday for a visit with old friends. Word has been received in Grand Rapids from Miss Keturah Cobb, late of the High school faculty, that her mother died at their home in Millers- burg, Ohio, on Saturday the 19th inst. Miss Cobb will have the sympathy of many Grand Rapids friends in her bereavement. Mesdames D, M. Gunn and Geo. Booth gave a party in honor of Miss Bernice Mallory, of Jacksontown, N. B., a neice of Mrs. Gunn, who has been here on a visit for some time. About twenty-five young ladies were present and enjoyed themselves to the fullest extent. The Catholic ladies will serve din- ner and supper Monday, July 5th, at Village hall. It is a great boom not to have to serve meals on a hot day and as the Catholic ladies always give the best there is, take your din- mer and supper there and help your- self and the church folks. F. M. Haynes and Miss Martha Berg both of this village, were married Sunday afternoon at three o’clock, Judge Huson performing the | cere- mony. The young and happy couple are well and favorably known in Grand Rapids and vicinity, and their many friends wish them a long life filled with unalloyed happiness. Harry B. Briggs of Deer River, son of A. E. Briggs of Grand Rapids, and Miss McKay of Deer River, were joined in marriage at the home of F. J. Mundigel in Grand Rapids, last ‘Wednesday evening at 8 o’clock. Rev. Dr. Briggs of; the M. E. church per- formed the ceremony. The young couple will make their home in Deer River. Monday evening at about nine o’clock a sneak thief who gave his name as Wm. Conners entered the I. X. L. cafe while the night clerk was up stairs, abstracted the sum of $16.50 from the cash drawer and got away without being -detected. Just as soon as the theft was discovered Officer Seamans was notified. Con- ners had been loitering about the town all day Monday and Officer Sea- mans had been keeping close tab on him, as he was a suspicious looking character, so when he was notified that the cafe had been robbed, he immediately rounded up Conners and searched him with the result that bout $1.300 was found on him. He was taken ‘before Judge Huson, where after thinking the matter over for a time, he decided to plead guilty. His bonds were set at $1,000 and he was turned over to the Sheriff. GRAND RAPIOS TEAM HAD BAD LUCK Won First Place in Novelty Race and Wet Test—Grand Rapids and Cass Lake Play 14 Friday was the last day of the Northérp Minnesota Firemans’ Tourn- ament which was held at Cass Lake With the exception of some small showers, the weather was ideal and the town was filled with interested supporters of each team. Grand Rap- ids has the, best all-around team in the bunch, but they had a run of bad luck. For the largest number of men in line the first prize was awarded to Park Rapids and the second to Ake- ley. Grand Rapids and Akeley tied for second place and drew straws to decide it. For the best appearance in line Akeley took first and Park Rapids took second prize. In the association hose race for the banner, Park Rapids made the run in 33 seconds, Akeley in 34 seconds and Cass Lake in 35 seconds. The ladder climbing contest was won by Wright of Park Rapids in 8 seconds. Douglas of Cass Lake took second in 8 and 2-5 and Patterson of Grand Rapids took third in 8 and 3-5 seconds. The hub and hub race was won by Park Rapids in 25 1-5 seconds. Granc Rapids came in second in 25 2-5 and Cass Lake came in third in 26 45 seconds. In the association hook and ladder service test Park Rapids again won in 23 3-5 seconds. Grand Rapids time was 35 and Akeley’s 36 2-5 seconds. The novelty hose race was won by Grand Rapids in 52 seconds. Akeley was second and Cass Lake third. Park Rapids won first money in the combination hook and ladder .and hose race in 27 2-5 seconds. Akeley was second in 28 1-5 and Cass Lake was third in 30 3-5 seconds. Pierce of Park Rapids won the foot race in 10 8-5 seconds. Lofberg of Grand Rapids came in second and Cass Lake third. 4 Grand Rapids won the wet test. Park Rapids took second and Akeley third. \ In the coupling contest Grand Rap- ids had some bad luck with their hook and ladder cart, which put them out of the race, but in a trial afterwards, Lofberg tied the association record. Friday afternoon Grand Rapids and Cass Lake played one of the best games of ball that has ever been seer in the range country. The Grand Rapids team was assisted by two of the Deer River players and had a winning team. The boys claim that they were given some “rotten decis- ions, declaring that if they had been given a fair deal the game rightfully belonged to them. At the end of the fourteenth inning the score stood 4 and 4, when the game had to be hearing was held this forenoon, but we go to press too early to learn the particulars.. Dr. Schmidt Arrives.
