SOUND ADVISE IS GIVEN TO FARMERS Press Bulletin No. 78, Issued by Superintendent McGuire of North- east Experiment Farm. THE RESULTS OF THE PAST YEAR A Brief Resume of Operations Dur- ing the Year 1908, in This Sec- tion of the State Together with Some Wholesome Suggestions. With the conclusion of 1908 we may look back over the results of the year, and from its experience shape more wisely the work of the coming year. The state farm as it is called by the neighbors has prospered, and it is hoped that every farmer in northeast- ern Minnesota has gained some good in the way of a better farm, a more comfortable home, and a greater kKoowledge and respect for his em- ployment. While noftheastern Minnesota has not had-as great aa increase insettle- ment the past year as its needs de- mand, there have been developments that are most encouraging for the farmer. The extention of railroads, the numerous new mining towns all calling for farm produce, and most of all the interest in the development of agriculture that 1s being shown by every one, from the homesteader to even the mining engineer. ‘More farmers and better farming for north- eastern Minnesota” has come to be the watch word. Pass it along till this section of our fair state is contri- buting its rich share to agriculture. ‘Till there 1s a farmer On every eighty acres of land. Till every swamp is drained and every needed road is built. Till every farmer realizes that farming is a business, and requires system, and study and co-operation with his fellow farmers, for success, even more than the business of the man who lives in town. The work of the experiment farm during the past year has been along the same line as described in a furmer bulletin. A system of practical farm- ing with dairying as the foundation. The alternation of clover with grain and cultivated crops. Selling only finished products: butter, meat, eggs, potatoes, vegetables and small fruits. The grain, hay, fodder, corn and roots are fed on the farm, and the fertility which they contain is largely return- ed to the soil in manure. 400 loads of stable manure was hauled out dur- ing the year and applied to the field. Through this and the growing of clover the soil of the farm is becom- ing a richer soil each year. Not only on the experiment farm but tbrough- out portheastern Micoesota the farm- ers who are practicing crop rotation— growing clover alternately on all the fields of the farm, and manuring each fleld every three or four years are se- curing equally good results. That dairying is to be the system of farming for northeastern Minne- sota is coming to be generally accept- ed. It is the dairy farmer who is now prospering most. The farmer who grows clover and feeds it on the farm, and who feeds it to the most productive of all animals the dairy cow. ‘Lo increase the number of cows in northeastern Minnesota, and to in- crease the acreage and cultivation so that feed may be grown for them is the most important agricultural sub- ject we have to consider. Fifty farmers in any community with 10 cows each can afford a cream- ery. With a production of 200 pounds of butter to the cow per year at 25c per pound, would mean an income to that community of $25,000 a year. This for butter alone. The ways and means of this indus- try is worthy of consideration. It is only through consideration and study that it may be brought about. t) Citation for Hearing on Petition to Sell, Mortgage or L e Land. Estate of Omah-dway-ah-ji-ween-oki.
