cerenerste ae PERUNA EDITORIAL NO. 2. Dr. Hartman has claimed for many years that Peruna is an EXCELLENT - CATARRH REMEDY. Some ofthe doctor's critics have disputed the doctor’s claim as to the efficacy of Peruna. Since the ingredients of Peruna are no longer a secret, what do the medi- €al authorities say concerning the remedies of which Peruna is composed? Take, for instance, the ingredient HYDRASTIS CANADENSIS, OR GOLDEN SEAL. The United States Dispensatory says of this herbal remedy, that it is largely employed in the treatment of depraved mucous membranes, chronic rhinitis (nasal catarrh), atonic dyspepsia (catarrh of the stomach), chronic intestinal catarrh, catarrhal jaundice (catarrh of the liver), and in diseased mucous membranes of the pelvic organs. It is also recommended for the treatment of various forms of diseases peculiar to women. Another ingredient of Peruna, CORYDALIS FORMOSA, is classed in the United States Dispensatory as a tonic. CEDRON SEEDS is another ingredient of Peruna, an excellent drug that has been very largely overlooked by the medical profession for the past fifty years. THE SEEDS ARE TO BE FOUND IN VERY FEW DRUG STORES. The United States Dispensatory says of the action of cedron that it is used as a bitter tonic and in the treatment of dysentery, and in intermittent diseases asa SUBSTITUTE FOR QUININE. OIL OF COPAIBA, another ingredient of Peruna, is classed by the United States Dispensatory asa mild stimulant and diuretic. It acts on the stomach and intestinal tract. It actsasa stimulant on the genito-urinary membranes, Useful in chronic cystitis, chronic dys- entery and diarrhea, and some chronic diseases of the liver and kidneys. These opinions as to the ingredients of Peruna are held by all writers on the subject, including Bartholow and Scudder. OF HYDRASTIS, BARTHOLOW SAYS it is applicable to stomatitis (catarrh of the mucous surfaces of the mouth), follicular pharyngitis (catarrh of the pharynx), chronic coryza (catarrh of the head). This writer classes hydrastis as a stomachic tonic, useful in atonic dyspepsia (chronic gastric catarrh), catarrh of the duodenum, catarrh of the gall duct, catarrh of the intestines, catarrh of the kidneys (chronic Bright's disease), catarrh of the bladder, and catarrh of other pelvic organs. BARTHOLOW REGARDS COPAIBA as an excellent remedy for chronic catarrh of the bladder, chronic bronchitis (catarrh of the bronchial tubes). BARTHOLOW STATES THAT CUBEB, an ingredient of Peruna, pro- motes the appetite and digestion, increases the circulation of the blood. Use- ful in chronic nasal catarrh, follicular pharyngitis (catarrh of the pharynx), increasing the tonicity of the mucous membranes of the throat. It also re- lieves hoarseness, Useful in atonic dyspepsia (catarrh of the stomach), and in chronic catarrh of the colon and rectum, catarrh of the bladder, prostatorrhea, and chronic bronchial affections. MILLSPAUGH, MEDICINAL PLANTS, one of the most authoritative works on medicinal herbs in the English language, in commenting upon COLLINSONIA CANADENSIS, says that it acts on the pneumogastric and vaso motor nerves, It increases the secretions of the mucous membranes in general. In the mountains of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Carolina, collinsonia canadensis is considered a panacea for many disorders, including headache, colic, cramp, dropsy and indigestion. DR. SCUDDER regards it highly as a remedy in chronic diseases of the lungs, heart disease and asthma. These citations ought to be sufficient to show to any candid mind that Pe- runa is a catarrh remedy. Surely, such herbal remedies, that command the enthusiastic confidence of the highest authorities obtainable, brought together in proper combination, ought to make a catarrh remedy of the highest efficacy. This is our claim, @ are able to substantiate this claim by ample alin from the HIGHES EST MEDICAL J AUTHORITIES IN THE WORLD, When the church gratts on this ] world it is not strange it ceases to bear the _fratts of another world. Congressional Library Holds Many of - Incalculable Value to the His- torian—Repairer’s Duty Is to Prevent Their Destruction. Scholars everywhere are aware that the congressional library holds manu- scripts of value incalculable to the historian, and, as these priceless treas- ures are available for use by stu- dents, there is a constant pilgrimage of learned and studious men to Wash- Ington to consult them. Persons hav- ing no knowledge of the manner of caring for and preserving valuable his- torical documents might well wonder that such papers, often very old and presumably ina poor state of preserva- tion, could be submitted to examina- tion and study without injury, if not absolute destruction. That is a prob- Jem which experts have happily solved. Not only are damaged and time-worn manuscripts restored in great measure by those who have made careful study of this distinct art, but they are mount- ed in such a way that ordinary han- dling does not injure them, and so that they can be used as freely as any book of reference and perhaps with even less danger of resulting damag? than is likely to befall the ordinary reference work. Many of the most valuable docu- ments coming into the possession of the library of congress have received very bad usage and some of them are torn and mutilated beyond the possibility of complete repair. With all of them, however, something can be done, and occasionally very sur- prising results are obtained. From the standpoint of the repairer of doc- uments it was a fortunate thing thai most of the papers of historical value were written with fast ink, made from nut galls by primitive but efficient processes, and that the paper used was of pure linen, hand-made, and re sistant to the tooth of time. What has proved to be a distinct draw- back was the tendency of the person who wrote those historic documents to economize in the use of paper, which was not only expensive in itself, but often bore a stamp tax as well, so that the writing very frequently was carried out to the very edge of the paper on the right-hand side. - In con- sequence, when the edges have be come worn with much use or saul age portions of the text have become irretrievably lost. Only conjecture = {by the student can fill out these ‘hanks. The repairer does not atempt such feats, a 4 Worthington G. Ford, chief of the division of maniiscripts in the library of congress, is considered the leading authority in his specialty in this coun- try, and in John C. Fitzpatrick, assist ant chief of the division, he has a capable aid. Mr. Ford, who is con- ducting a great labor in the editing and publication of valuable historic papers, is now working on the restora- tion and preservation of the George Washington manuscripts, comprising eight large collections and about 50,000 pieces. “These papers,” said Mr. Ford, “comprise the most valuable collection the government holds, not only his- torically but autographically. They are more used than any other papers. We are expending more care and at- tention on this collection than we give to ordinary historical papers. 1 may say that no two collections de- mand the same treatment, but the Washington, Jefferson and Hamilton papers and the records of the con- tinental congresg are of especial value from every point of view, and they are given our best care. Merely gaug- ing it from a money standpoint, the Washington collection is easily worth $500,000, and from a historical stand. point it is priceless.” Bachelor Wants Protection. Word has been received at the war flepartment that bachelors living in the canal zone are debating whether they need ‘the curfew law for protec- tion against the bibulous and con- rivial among their number. The sug: gestion that a curfew law be estab- lished for night roaming bachelors on the isthnius came from one of the em- ployes living in bachelor quarters. This employe took advantage of the tanal commission’s invitation for sug- gestions looking to the betterment of the service by making the following proposition: “First, the establishment of a cur- few hour not later than ten o'clock when lights in bachelor’s quarters should be abolished. “Second, the absolute prohibition of bringing liquor into quarters.” The employe added ingeniously, in making this second suggestion that he did not know whéther it was against the present regulations to have liquor in bachelor quarters, “but if not it should be.” Easy Jobs at Washington. There are some strange jobs around the United States capitol. One fa- vored constituent of an _ influential congressman draws a fat salary for sprinkling tooth powder in the capitol telephones. Once a week this happy mortal, with a smile upon his face, makes the rounds of the various com- mittee rooms and carefully dusts into the receivers of the telephones a little pink, scented tooth powder. Thus statesmen are enabled to breathe sweet perfume as they talk over the phone. There is another employe who is the “official measurer” of the house of representatives. EYESIGHT WAS IN DANGER From Terrible Eczema—Baby’s Head a Mass of Itching Rash and Sores —Disease Cured by Cuticura. “Our little girl was two months old | when she got a rash on her face and within five days her face and head were all one sore. We used different remedies but it got worse instead of better and we thought she would turn blind and that her ears would fall off. She suffered terribly, and would scratch until the blood came. This went on until she was five months old, then I had her under our family doc- tor’s care, but she continued to grow worse. He said it was eczema. When she was seven months old I started to use the Cuticura Remedies and in two months our baby was a different girl. You could not see a sign of a sore and she was as fair as a new- born baby.
