Recognized by Everybody as the Leading Weekly Newspaper of Northeastern Minnesota. R. M. Basbford has been appointed by Gov. Wisconsin, to fillthe unexpired term of the late Chief Justice Cassody of the supreme court. A man sut in Nebraska had a_ herd of Angora goats and put them oman island in the river to clear up the brush and weeds. They not only ate up ali the trash and -yegetation, but in pursuit of succulent roots in the spongy soil of the island, they made openings that operated like a crevasse in the river dikes and the away and the goats had to swim to the main land, BESSA According to a recent Washington dispatch the interior department has rendered a ‘formal decision of great importance to Indians on the White island melted Earth reservation in Minuesota, and to those who have tried to purchase lands from the Indians. The depart- ment holds that the Indians are en- titled to their lands under a patent giyiug a fee-simple title. Under such a patent the Indians wilNnave full power to sell the lands, and will be able to givea clear title to the purchaser. Nearly 2,8000 patents have been issued under the so-called Burke act, which was susposed to change the former law, and to give the Indians title only during lifetime, the land to reyert to the government at the that period. Many of the who have been desirous of their lands, and removing elsewhere. or using the money to contine their education elsewhere, found it impossible to sell. because a ‘lear title could not be given. Senator Clapp bas received notice that under the ruling of the depart- ment, new patents would beissued as guickly as possible to the 2,800 Indians interested, the new patents giving them full title to the land>~ oy end of Indians selling Ousted as Mayor of Nashwauk: Woman Indicted for Perjury Invited to baad the State. District court adjourned on Tues- day until March 3rd, the jury are ex- cused, aud Judge Spooner and court reporter Cameron have gone to Be- midji. The state, on motion of County Attorney Thwiny, moved to. dismiss the case against Thomas =. uleys mayor of Nashwauk. This was an action brought for non- enforcement of the license laws of the state, and it was sought to oust Riley from office and impose a fine, and has created considerable interest especially in the surrounding towns. It was desired ori the part of the pros- ecution to bave the case continued, but defendant objected and made a demand that a jury ‘‘sit on the case” forthwith as aforesaid, and the state backed down. The mayor goes back to his baliwick without fearor favor and the lid has a jolt. One Mary A. Witt, with an alias of Rosed; who gained notoriety as a wit- ness: in the trial of former Judge Cochran of Wright county, and who was indicted for perjary on account of her testimony in said case, ad- mitted that she was guilty and was seritenced to five years in the peni- tentiary. The court was lenient and suspended sentence for 48 hours to enable the woman to get out of the state. The woman agreed te take up her residence elsewhere and will propably keep away from Minnesota in the future. The jury decided in favor of the defendant in the case of L. R. Root vs Edward Chicoine, charged with the conversion of a horse and rig. Victor Johnson, who was convicted of assault in the second degree previ- ous to the holiday recess, was on Monday sentenced to one year at hard labor in the penitentiary. COUNTY BOARD’S FIRST MEETING (Continued from flirst page.) Rapids; the Itasca News, Deer River‘ and the Itasca Iron News, Bovey. All bids were identically the same, viz: Seventy-five cents per folio for the first insertion and _ thirty*five cents per follo for\each subsequent insertion; fifteen cents per descrip- tion for printing the tax list. The Herald-Review’s bid for pririting the commissioners’ proceedings and other notices, except the financial state- ment and tax list, contained a pros vision to cause the publication there- of in the Itasca News. This proposi- tion was accepted, very naturally, as it will give the tax-payers in every section of the county an opportunity to keep posted on public business dur- ing the year. The Herald-Review was desigoated as the official paper of the county in which shall be pub- lished all notices required by law to be published, including the com- missioners’ proceedings and the finan- cial statement, The Itasca News was awarded the printing of the tax list. J. G. Hermis, overseer of the poor farm, was authorized to receive samples of the material found by the parties drilling on the poor farm. | A list of grand and petit jurors was selected by the commissioners from poll lists. -Chairman Mullins appointed the following standing committees for the ensuing year: Road and bridge—O’Brien, and Mullins. Pi King Mullins and 7 School teachers occasionally meet with amusing experiences as the fol- lowing illustrates: A teacher in a public school sent ad: urchin home to get washed up an3j generally renovat- ed, and sent the following note with him: ‘Please give John a bath. He isso dirty and smells so badly that L really canrot stand it any longer.” John came back to school the next morning as dirty and as odiferous as usual and cen the following note to his teacher: “jonny ain’t no violet. don’t smell him. lern him,’’ Send in your subscriptions’ and watch us grow. ‘tion list of a prominent might person.
