'’he simplest and plainest laws of health are outraged every hour of the day by the average man, Says an ex- change. Did Admsmoke? Did Eve wear corests? Did Solomon chew to- bacco? Did Ruth chew gum? Did the children of Israeli make for a beer garden after crossing the Red Sea? Did Rebecca eat gum drops and ice cream and call for soda water? Adam was the first man and was made perfect from head to heel. | How long would he remain so after eating mince pie before going to bed? Suppose he had slept ina bedroom 5x7 with the window down, the door shut and two dogs under the bed? Suppose Eve had laced her- self up in a corset, put on tight shoes sat up all hours of the night eating her fill of trash and sizzied her hair. When you come to look at the way a man misbehaves himself, you can only wonder that he ever lived to become a mun. For the Dread Diphtheria. At the first indication of diph?heria in the throat of a child make the room close, take a tin cup and pour into it an equal quantity of pine tar and tur- pentine, then hold the cup over a fire, so as to fill the room with the fumes, says a writer. The patient in inhaling the fumes will cough and spit up the membranous matter and the diph- theria may pass off. The fumes of the tar and turpentine lessen the trouble in the throat and thus afford the re- lief that has baffled the skill of physi- cians to give, but, above all, send for @ doctor at once. One of Barrymore’s Last. A friend of Maurice Barrymore re- lates an incident of his last meeting with the brilliant actor, only a short time before the latter’s faculties be- gan to fail. As they were parting the friend asked: “Where are you to be found nowadays—at the Players?” “No,” replied Barrymore, “I’m posted at the Players, but you can always find me at the Lambs. As a matter of fact,” he added, whimsically, “I'm posted at the Lambs, too,, but they temper the wind there.” - Locality of the Wishbone. There is an old-fashioned little gir! in the city, aged seven, whose quaint and unexpected sayings greatly amuse those who know her and may cause a smile when told to strangers. One day when the family were enjoying roast chicken she asked her father for the wishbone. “Where shall I look for it?” he said. “Why in the tail, of course. That’s what miakes it wag the feathers when it wants to, isn’t {t?” she asked'—-Chicago American Miles of Fish. Immense schools of tuna still swarm about the bay and stretch up out of the island coast as far as the isthmus, a distance of fotrteen miles, and the number is simply beyond computation, says the Avalon correspondent of the Los Angeles Times. The schools of fish are not all tuna, but have a liberal mixture of albicore, shipjacks and barracuda. Where the legions of fish come from is a great mystery, and the wonder is that so great a multitude, with the appetites of healthy tuna, can find enough food in the sea with which to appease their hunger. sa na
