‘PE-RU-NA A MEDICAL COMPOUND/OLD BIBLE Boxes In any medical compound as much depends upon the manner in which it is Compounded as upon the ingredients used. First, there must be a due proportion of the ingredients. Each drug in the Pharmacopeia has its special action. To combine any drug with other drugs that have slightly different action, the combination must be made with strict Teference to the use for which the compound is intended. The drugs may be well selected as to their efficacy, but the compound ENTIRELY SPOILED BY THE PROPORTION in which they are combined. It takes years and years of experience to discover this proportion. There is no law of chemistry, of pharmacy, by which the exact balance of proportion can be determined. EXPERIENCE IS THE ONLY GUIDE. In compounding a catarrh remedy Dr. Hartman has had many years’ ex- Perience. In the use of the various ingredients which compose the catarrh remedy, Peruna, he has learned, little by little, how to harmonize the action of each ingredient, how to combine them into a stable compound, how to arrange them into such nice proportions as to blend the taste, the operation and the chemical pecndarities of each several ingredient in order to produce a pharma- ceutical product beyond the criticism of doctors, pharmacists or chemists. WE REPEAT, THAT AS MUCH DEPENDS ON THE WAY IN WHICH Bae ee ARE COMBINED AS DEPENDS UPON THE DRUGS THEM- The compound must present a stability which is not affected by changes of temperature, not affected by exposure to the air, not affected by age. It must be so combined that it will remain just the same whether used in the logging or mining camps of the northwest or the coffee plantations of the tropics. Acomplete list of the ingredients of Peruna would not enable any druggist or physician to reproduce Peruna. It isthe skill and sagacity by which these ingredients are brought together that give Peruna much of its peculiar claims as an efficacious catarrh remedy. However much virtue each ingredient of Peruna may possess, the value of the compound depends largely upon the manner and proportion in which they ere combined. The right ingredients, put together rightly, is the only way a medical compound can be made of real value. SHIEFLY RELICS OF THE SEVEN- TEENTH CENTURY. In Use When the Sacred Book Was Frequently the Entire Library of the Household—Sometimes Set on Stands. In the “Age of Oak,” when furniture was scarce and books scarcer, the family Bible more often than not rep- resented the entire library of the household, besides serving to contain the record of its domestic happenings. {t was among the most valued pos- sessions bequeathed from father to son, together with the bed and its furnishings and the other household treasures so carefully enumerated in the wills and inventories of the time. But few houses could boast of a study, though here and there a study existed such as the so-called “Paradise” at Wressil Castle, Yorkshire, of which Miss Esther Singleton, in her “French and English Furniture,’ quotes Le- land’s quaint description: “A closett in the middle of eight squares lattised about, and at the top of.every square was a deske ledged to fit bookes on and cofers within them, and these seemed as joined hard to the top of this closett; and yet by pulling, one or all would come down briste high in rabattes, and serve for deskes to lay bookes on.” Bookcases were not, there being indeed but little need for them, and so the sacred folio was gen- erally provided with a shrine of its own in the form of 4 substantial oak box, more or less enriched with carv- An Old Bible Box. ing, which found its place on top of the chest or table of similar material and decoration. The seventeenth cen- tury was the period in which these Bible boxes were most numerously produced, though they were in use from the-time of the Reformation un- til well into the eighteenth century. It is by no means rare, to meet with them nowadays in old furniture shops and galleries, and from the decora- tive as well as the utilitarian point of view, they are distinctly desirable acquisitions; though a note of warn- ing may well be given as to avoiding the imitations which are all too easy to come by. That all the Bible boxes, so-called, were actually and exclusive- ly used for this purpose is doubtful; probably many did duty as receptacles for the smaller valuables, personal or- naments and such like which needed safer keeping than that of the large chests and coffers in which clothes and hangings were stowed away; sometimes, also, they may have been used for the preservation of deeds and papers, though these generally found a place in specially made iron-bound coffers of small size. The oak boxes An Old Bible Box With Stand. measure, as a rule, from two feet six inches to two feet nine inches, or three feet, and it may be taken as a characteristic of the Bible box proper that it has no drawers or fittings of any kind, while the box intended to hold small articles of value is often furnished with little shelves, trays, drawers or pigeon-holes. Others, again, still more rare, are set upon a stand of their own, an ex- ample of this being the box in illus- tration No. 2, which is mounted upon a high ocak stand with turned baluster legs. A particularly fine Bible box of the early part of the seventeenth cen- tury has a very deep-cut carving on the sides, embodying the favorite de- vice of the Tudor rose, the vine, and the daisy, the latter ornament owing gin as an emblem in English dec- y art probably to an allusion to the name of Marguerite of Anjou, queen of Henry VII. It is a particu- larly rare and fine specimen, forming in itself an extremely decorative piece of furniture. Horse’s Remarkable Escape. A remarkable case of tenacity to life is reported from Swansea, Wales. Six men entombed in a flooded mine at Gorseinon, Glam., were rescued some days ago after a hairbreadth es- cape. Before seeking their own safety the men took the only horse they had underground with them to the high- est portion of the workings, and placed close by about ten bushels off grain and chaff—al] the food they could find. No one thought that the horse would come out alive. The pit was pumped out 17 days afterward, and the explorers were astonished to find tb®dhorse alive. Ship Your Cream to Ur.
