News Gathered During the Week id A. B. Clair returned from a busi-}. W.P. Remer was down from the VILLAGE BOOKS ARE RELEASED. After withholding the books of the village for several weeks and ‘caus- ing much inconvenience and afnoy- ance to the village authorities, they were finally released from ‘the con- fines vf a vault in the basement of the court house this week und sure rendered to Recorder Graffam. © The holding of thess publi¢ records was a peculiar proceeding, to'say the’ least. Freeman, the accountant to whom they had been submitted for in- spection, had. finished “all work that he was supposed to do on them some time ago, but would not give them up on. the pretext that County Atturney Spear would not permit him‘to-do so. ery. It 1s ardly ‘necessary to, here record that the statement is a damlie. Poor ‘little ‘Tony, however, 1s not to blame for anything that is in or out of the Independent. Mr. Spear fools Tony and can “prevail upon him to print any old slander that happens to develop in his dried-up ‘intellect. The good die young. We see Tony’s fia- ish—Spear will kill him. A. M. Finally Freeman disappeared from town and then Spear represented that the books were locked up in ‘Free- man’s trunk and he-could not get ac- cess to them. When Spear was pressed for the delivery of the records he referred the recorder to J. S.,Gole. Mr. Gole revealed the hiding place in a subterranean vault of the court house. It is rather difficult to imag- ine any reasonable or legitimate ex- cuse for the retention -of these records by parties who had no au- thority whatever to keep them from the village officials, It may have been Mr. Spear’s disappointment and chagrin at not being able to im- prison the ex-recorder that prompted him to throw the recerds into a dungeon for an indefinite period. Or. Mayhap, it was a plan to embarras the present recorder by making 1t impossible for hit to get the village accyunts straightened up in a man- ner that would admitof his trans- acting the public business in a satis factory way. If Mr. Graffam could not get possession of the records it would be impossible for him to demunstrate his efficiency in office and hence his services would not.com- mend him to the electors should he be a candidate for election next March. Herald-Review for Job: Printing, lage recordership who would like to see Mr. Graffam embarrassed as much as possible in the performance of his public duties. IS THE BAND APPRECIATED ? Al. Roecker, leader and manageg of the Grand Rapids band, bas a com- munication in this issue of the Her- ald-Review ia which he offers a mild protest against the evident lack? of. interest shown by. the pevuplesof Grand Rapids in the work of the band. Mr. Roecker does not. conte: plain because of lack of tinancial support. He fully realizes that the public has been very generous in €x- tending substantial aid toward keep-” ing this splendid musical © organs ization together, and he appreciates in full measure this gencrosity The keeping up of a good band in a town the size of ‘srand Rapids requires not only considerable money and time but a great deal of talent, constant practice and unfailing interest of every member at all times. It jis freely admitted that Grand Rapids can boast of one of the finest bands in the state, but Hke many another blessing that we enjoy tuo freely, our appreciation is apt to wane. If this town had no band and one should visit us, not half so good as the one we have, how the people wold throng to hear the music, rave over it and deplore our lack of enterprise in not having a musical organization that would lend life and delight to the community. It is because we have such a splenuid band, willing at all times to furnish music, that we accept it as a matter of course. This is not right. The band boys will not keep up their interest in music un- less the public shows an appreciation of their efforts. That the efficiency of the band will decline without proper encouragement from the pub- lic goes without saying. Mr. Roecker calls attention to a concert that will be given by the band at the High school auditorium on the 18th inst. A good timeand a good way to show proper apprecia- tion of the merits of the band will be to attend this musical entertain- tnent. DISTINGUISHED CONSIDERATION Of the many thousands of persons who pay taxes in this county the pro- prietor of the Herald-Revtew 1s the only one of such distinguished person- ality as to merit a special mention in the columns of the Independent. In this we feel honored beyond- our deserts. Such distinguished captains of industry as the Shevlins, Akeleys, Pillsbury’s, Walkers, and many others have had their names upon the delin- quent list of taxpayers in this county, and yet none of them have ever thus been honored by the iridescent Inde- pendent. Of course the Independent could not resist the temptation to work in a falsehood when chronicling the important event, and stated that “a levy was made on a part of this print. =? Pust Muster Workman—Edward Burke. sonal taanagement of Mr. Hilbrecht it has lost none of its former popu- larity. Mr. Johnson is one of the oldest business men in Grand Rapids and he certainly needs no formal in- troduction to the public. It 1s suffi- cient to say. that the Boston Grand will be conducted as a first class place in every particular, where food, drink and sleep will be furmshed. Harvey Clough has charge of the cafe and that fact is a sufficient guarantee that it will be an up to-date restaurant. Old Settlers’ Dance. For some time a committee of old people have been considering plans tor an old settlers’ dance. The Her- ald- Review 1s authorized to announce that Village hall has been char- tered for the event and that it will take place on Lincoln’s birthday, Feb- Tuary 12.
