Why, how old are you?” “Sixty-seven, monsieur.” “And you still have a grandfather?” “Oh, yes, at the Jardin des Plantes. He’s a skeleton. I take my own grandchildren to see him once a month. It amuses itself by singing, and lives on blood. When it stops singing you feel a pain some- where about you, and then you slap where the pain is. The mosquito will bite animals, but prefers the human race. It never does any good to swear when a mosquito bites you. It doesn’t help you a bit, and it irritates the mosquito. Lord Chancellor Campbeli knew this when at dinner of authors he sud- denly rose, asked that glasses might be charged, and submitted “Napo- leon.” There were cries of dissent, but Campbell went on undisttirbed: “We as authors must feel that the name of Wapoleon should he held in honor, for let us never forget that he once shot a publisher.” That toast of bullion which had to be car-|was drunk with enthusiasm.—Black and White. It was Mr, Hastings intention to spend the winter months in California, and when here a short time ago he said he would leave for the west as soon as the mild weather then prevailing showed a disposition to make way for the customary cold ofthis section. It seems, however, thathe tarried too long and is now unable to make the journey. His many friends in Grand Rapids will hope to hear that the trouble 1s only temporary and that he will soon be able to proceed on his contemplated trip to the mild climate of California where he will be benefitted in health. 7 5 Notice of Expvration of Redemption, Office of County Anditor, t County of Itasea, State of Minnesota.
