Last Sunday morning about 7:30 o'clock flre‘was discovered in a res idence building on Simpson avenue between Fourth and Fifth streetsand soon burned to the ground. ‘Tne house was occupied by the families of Alderman H. G. Becker and Joseph Stevens, and was owned by M.J. Baker of Deer River. The fire seems to have originated between the ceil- ing aad roof of the building and evi- deutly had a good start before it was discovered as the rvof fell and in an incredibly short time after the fire alarm was sounded. - ‘The depart- ment responded quickly but could not make cc nnection with any hydrant close enough¢ to reach the building. By prompt action all of the house- hold goods of Mr. Becker were saved and that gentleman says he never saw a heater or more expeditions job of that kind done in his life. He ex- presses himself as deing thankful to the firemen and neighbors who lent their prompt and effective assistance in saving his household velongings. The building was insured for $1,000 and Mr. Stevens carried $400 on his goods, which were a total loss.
