NR IE EEA HOPES DASHED BY DECISION Persons Having Filed on Lands in Sections 16 and 36 in Indian Reservations Beaten, Hopes of persons who have filed ou lands in sections 16 and 36 of the Minnesota Indian reservations on the strength of the United States supreme court decision holding that the state had no legal claim to these lands, seem to have been dashed by the contrary decision of the commis sioner of the general land office, -as announced in a_ special dispatch Saturday from St. Cioud to the News Tribune. The case is of considerable import- ance to those who follow land mat- ters. The state, under the law, is entitled to all lands in sections 16 and 36 of the public domain in Min- nesota, and the state auditor made claim to these sections in all town- ships of the reservations as well. The United States supreme court held that the state is not entitled to the reservation lands, and the de- cision was worded in such a way that “}mmany were led to believe that sec- tions 16 and 36 in the reservations were subject to entry. The decision held to the effect that such lands belunged to the public do- main. Attorney Nye, of Minneapolis, is said to have been one of the law- yers who believed that under the de- cision properly qualified persons could make application for and hold the lands in the respective amounts to which they were entitled.- There was an extensive rush for the land offices for the purpose of submitting applications: In each case the appli- cations were rejected, and now the commissioner of the general land office has sustained the St. Cloud officials. It is expected that in the course of /time similar decisions will be re- ceived at the United States land office in Duluth. ‘The next devision affecting sections 16 and 36 will come from the secretary of the interior. He will either affirm or reverse the desisiou of the general land office. Under the decision of the United States supreme court the state is en- titled to select other lands in lieu of those which it does not get in the reservations. The state will be en- titled under this ruling to select 400,000 acres, and its agents are now in the field looking up lands for that purpose.—Duluth News Tribune. — HARVEST FOR SPORTSMEN _—L Promising Prospects for Game in Minnesota. During Present Season, Minnesota sportsmen will this fall have the best quail, chicken and duck shooting that has been known in the GRAND RAPIDS. | state during the past ten years. The law prohibiting the sale of game is beginning to have a marked effect on the supply of game of all kinds in the state, as it has done away with the Promiscuous pot-hunting for the market. “The prospects were never better for good shooting,” says Executive Agent Fullerton of the state game and fish commission. “The law pro- hibiting the sale of the game is re- sponsible for the fact that the supply is increasing instead. of decreasing. The law prohibiting spring shooting is also having an effect, even greater than we had hoped for. The ducks can now fly northward and rest un- disturbed, se "| “The game wardens frou all parts of the state report that ducks are hatching in every slough that con- tains water. The shooting will not only be better than for many years, but it will be distributed more generally over the stare. Ducks are hatching in places from which they were driven twenty years ago by spring shooting. “Chickens are reported abundant, and the prospects point to the best chicken shooting in along time. The law prohibiting the sale of game has affected chickens as much if not more than any other kind of game. “Quail shooting, however, will show the greatest improvement, and will probably be the most appreciated by sportsmen. In addition to the better protection now furnished by the game laws, the weather has been most favorable for the quail for the past two years. A severe winter tells on them very much. We have now had two mild winters in succession, and this has had an effect that has sur- prised us. There will be no lack uf places this fall where good quail shooting can be found.” NEW DEAL ON ARCTURUS D. H. Freeman, One of the Fee Owners says Ore Body is all Right. D. Hy Freeman, one of the fee owners of the celebrated Arcturus iron mine, was in Grand Rapids this week, “There is nothing of interest to say about the Arcturus,” said Mr. Freeman. ‘Mr..Howe did not take the property and now we are enter- taining anothor proposition, We claim that the title to the property is all right and we are prepared to give a warranty deed for it. Mr. Howe has never informed us whether he was satisfied or dissatisfied with the Arcturus, nor whether he found .|as big a deposit as he expected. We know that $45,000 has been spent in ‘exploring the Arcturus, and that it has a body of ore that we are not ashamed of. The ore body extends across two forties but we are not certain of its width. To be sute there is more or less sand in the ore but a part of the deposit is a washing proposition, and when it is washed the ore is of very superior quality, and would bring a premium over any other Mesaba ore.” Heinz pure cider vinegar, at Kre- mer & Kremer; the grocers. ast, > / FURNITURE —— & UNDERTAKING We have some choice bargains in Bed room suits, Chifforintes and dressing tables in golden oak and mahogny, A conplete line of cubboards, stdeboards, bookcaess THE REAL THING rs a \e Is a slang expression, meaning “up to the limit,” another slang phrase whose meaning is much the same as “the real thing.” This definition may not be pre- cisely luminous.
