— ane * j eo eel Mrs. C. T. Glover is in Aitkin on a visit to friends and relatives. Capt. J. H. Hasty was down from his Praine River farm Thursday, W. J. Kelly is negotiating for the purchare of the W. E. Neal residence on Leland avenue. J. W. Reynolds, one of Duluth’s most prominent attoneys and land dealers, was here the first of the week. C. W. Lang is among the atten- dants at court from Koochiching. He is a witnessin the Randalph case. Ed Randolph and wife and Miss Kelly of Mine Center, Ont.. have been at the Pokegama during the week, T. H. Hennessy wiil leave to- morrow for St. Paul as the representa- tive of the local lodge I. O. O. F. to the grand lodge meeting in that city. Word was rcteived from Minneap- olis this week announcing the death Millet. For those who by reason of wet land, or pressure of other work, have been unable to sow. oats until too late to iusure a good crop, or have not succeeded in getting a stand of grass, millet isa valuable crop. It should not besown much earlier than the first of much heat for germination, and if sown in cold soil of season, will lie in the ground until after the hardier weed seeds have started, which may smother it out entirely. Millet may be sown until the last week in June and still produce agood crop of hay but it sown this late it is important to get the common or northern mil- let. The German or southern millet while it produces larger crops, may not ripen if sown after the middle of June. If millet is to be cut for hay it should never be left until the seeds become hard as these are very inde- ‘gestible and often’ cause trouble when fed to cows or horses. This is of John Lucas, the cruiser, who had been in poor health for a number of years. Editor Ernest Hollar of the Border 3udget and County Commissioner Frank Lang were arrivals from Koo- chiching on Sunday. Mr. Hollar was a member of the grand jury. Sénator C, C. McCarthy went to Duluth tis week to consult.a special- ist relative to a troublesome ear, He returned Thursday much improved. The Northern Cafe is now ynder the management of “Doc.” Welsh, one of the best known cooks 1n Itesca county. He is determined to make this the finest restaurant in Northern Minnesota, and he knows just how to do it. ‘There is nothing in the market that he is not prepared to serve at all times and in the very best style. “Doc.” will be pleased to have his friends call at any time and guaran- tees that the most complete satisfac- tion that good} cooking of good things to eat can give to inner man, Remember the‘location,—in the rear of John O’Reilley’s sample room, “The Northern.” A ROUSING CELEBRATION Grand Rapids Fire Department Will Have a Glorious Fourth. At a meeting of the fire depart- ment held ‘Tuesday evening it was decided that Grand Rapids could not well afford to allow the nation’s natal day of 1902 to pass by without ap- propriate observance and as no other crganization in the village had taken anv action in the matter the boys de- cided to take hold of the affair and at once begin preparations for a celebra- tion on amore eloborate scale than ever before attempted in this enter- prising community, Our volunteer fire department is well equipped with knowledge and experience to handle the details of such a public entertain- j ment as a Fourth of July celebration, as they have had ample training in directing and arranging them in the past, and their efforts have always been decidedly successful, Froma stand- point of expenditure of money a Fourth of July celebration always pays for itself, and those who con- tribute to the fund necessary to carry on such an enterprise have found by experience that . their donations are returned to their tills with good in- terest added. When the soliciting committee calls, our business men should respond with their accustomed liberality and jom heartily in the move to make a complete success of the undertaking. Itasea Gun ‘Club The Itasca Gun club is making pre- parations for the season’s shoot. About fifty gentlemen will constitute the membership and a busy, active, interesting summer will soon be inau- gurated, A number of the boys are figuring on going to Cass Lake at the time of the fire touraament. Settled Out of Court “The state of Minnesota vs. Martin Stram” was taken out of court yester- day by the performance of a marriage ceremony by Justice Huson. Martin Stram and Ada Poepke were married and the criminal charge withdrawn as the complaining witness in the case had become the wife of the defendant aud theretore could not testify against her husband. Increasing Interest. The Grand Rapids fire department boys have been industrions during the past three weeks in making ready for the Cass Lake tournament Captain Riddell 1s determined to take a strong team to the races, and he is satisfied with the excellent work bemg done. ‘The village council will defray the ex- penses of the team.on the tip. ~ Special School Meeting. Notices have been posted calling for a special school meeting of Dis- -t No. 1, to be held June 9, Mon- aay next, at Village hall at 7 o’clock p. m., for the purpose of voting upon the matter of erecting anew school building im this village, and to deter- mine the cost and location of the same. There should be a large at- tendance. ‘ the cause of a certain prejudice against millet hay. Ifthe hav is cut early there will be no difficulty. For ordinary seeding, three pecks per acre is sufficient. : Herman H. CnapMan. WARNING AGAINST FOREST AN PRAIRIE FIRES.
