Swedish Papers Criticise Statements of Capt. Christmas, « National Tiderde of Copenhagen, Denmar, devotes a column and a half to Walter Christmas, the railitary gen- tle man with the triplieate name, and his efforts to inveigle the United States minister to Denmark, Lauritz A. Swen- son, into standing sponsor for a state- ment which Capt. Christmas desired to have cabled to Secretary Hay. As a special inducement, he offered to pay the cable tolls. In this statement which Capt. Christ- mas gave to the -ress through Ritzau’s bureau, before it could possibly have reached Minister Swenson, he charges that Niels Gron was employed by the Danes to delay the sale of the Danish Antilles. He directly accuses Gron of having garbled and falsified his report to the government on the alleged brib- ery. The doughty caytain denies that he ever intimated to President Horring that bribes were necessary to effect the sale of the islands and that a 10 per cent commission was the first essential for the sale. Furthermore, he declares that he never named any congressmen to whom he had promised money. The banking hose of Seligman, he says, never guaranteed any funds to be used in effecting the eale. aAs Mi wenson was not in any manner i din the Christmas or Gron afta he wes, naturally, greatly surprised t to officially forv st statement. ORISIS WAS NOT SERIOUS. Premier Steen Simply Retired on Account of Age. The ministerial cricis in Norway was |not such a serious , after all. Pre- mier Steen simply retired on account of his advanced age. It was intimated that Qvam Arctand- er, and one or two others were prepar- ing to hand in their portfolios, and a radical reorganization of the cabinet was expected. Minister Blehr, who rep- resented Norway at Stockholm, was the choice of a majority of the Liberal members in the storthing for the pre- miership. The place was first offered to Berner, president of the storthing, but Blehr was eventually seiected. He invited Dr. Sigurd Ibsen to become a member of the ‘cabinet, taing the vacart posi- ficn at Stockholm. The invitation was ecepted. Z Dr. Ibsen is the only son of Henrik Ibsen, the famous dramatist. He was bern in Norway, in 1859, but was edu- cated largely in fcreign countries, par- ticularly at Munich and Rome. His Goctor’s degree, for instance, was ob- tained in Rome, on a paper in the Ital- lan languzge. He has held several government posi- tions from time to time, and has been connected with several newspapers and magazines. 1 SYSTEM USED EVERYWHER™.
