City and Vicinity. NOTES OF NEWS AND PERSONAL. Mrs. C. H, Marr is. visiting in Deer River, Mike McAlpine made Deer River a visit this week. J. P. Sims left for Minneapolis yes- terday morning. C. T. Glover has moved into the M. A. Leahy residence. A. H. Powers, the well known lum- berman, was in town Tuesday. J. W. Johnson and Tom Sheehy were down from Deer River today. W. W. Wright, of Swan River, made the county hub a visit early in the week, J. McDonald, of Swan River, was a visitor to the county metropolis this week. Zuzu is the name of a new post- office in Cass county, and L. S. Card is appointed postmaster. Mr. John Craig arrived from Deer River last evening and will enjoy afew days’ visit here with his family. ]. L. McCoy, superintendent of the timber cutting on the Chippewa reser- vation, was in town Wednesday. W. J. Kelly and Stanley Gordon were among those who were in the Rapids today trom Deer River. A. E. Chase and D. McClellan, of Elk River, were among the strangers who paid th good town ,a, visit this week. Price Bros sent a crew of men up on Prairie ner the fore part of the week toco nence driving on that stream. Dr. B_ cock, C. H. and A. P. Smith, prominent business men of Verndale, made Grand Rapids a visit on ‘Tuesday last. Dr. Allen’s cottage at Pokegama lake—Idlewild—is for rent during the season or will be sold by Kremer & King, Abstract office. Mauiice Hennessy arrived during the week from Florida, and will spend the summer here visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. ‘I. H. Hen nessy. Mrs. W. Maddy went to Princeton this week 1n response to a message summoning her to the bedside of her father who is reported very ill at that place. Why shouldn’t Dan Doran be a silver man? ‘The other day while pull- ing stumps on his farm he unearthed a silver mine. He says it will assay about 16 to 1, Mrs. F. T. Bueneman went to Duluth on Wednesday morning last, whither she was called by a message announcing the serious illnzss there of her sistea, Mrs. W. H. Lord. Ory Harry was brought down from Deer River on Wednesday morning last suffering from a severe attack of pneumonia. His condition is some- what improved at this writing. George. S. Libby’s friends will be pleased to learn that he has so _ far re- recovered from his recent attack of pneumonia as to be able to leave his room and take a little exercise. Geo. Myers is contemplating em- barking in the general merchandise business in Grand Rapids, and if he concludes to do so will erect the necessary store buildings on the va- cant lots opposite the Hotel Glad- stone. The heavy winds on Wednesday last laped up the sands on Kindred avenue and made travel on that street like unto that one would expect in encountering a simoon. The village council should have that thoroughfare coated with gravel at once. Deer River citizens will no longer have reason to complain of having poor water, The village authorities recently caused a well to be sunk in the center of the town, and ata depth of 89 feet a flowing well rewarded their efforts. ‘The water is clear, cold as ice and pronounced absolutely pure. Micheal Deering, one of the Deer Lake prosperous farmers, wasa visitor at the county capitol this week. Mr. Deering has a fine ranch on Deer lake, and as he 1s a sportsman of the old school he wouldn’t trade his _ pre- sent home for a mansion on Fifth avenue, N. Y, Editor D. C, Anderson of the Carl- ton Vidette made the Herald-Review a fraternal call Thursday. Dave came up to superintend the seeding opera- tions on his Prairie river farm, and for a couple of weeks will lay aside the labors of pushing the Faber and_ in- dulge in the more congenial task of pushing the plow. Dr. M. McKinnon, of Fosston, Minn., physician for the Great Nor- thern R’y., was in town this week, his services having been called for by the construction department of that road Deer River. While here he deputized Dr. H. B. Ehle to look after his com- pany’s medical work in this vicinity. County Commissioner C. W. Robin- Grand MRevids Mheraide'Review son and wife were among the visitors from Deer River today. They attend- ed the funeral of Mrs, James A. Qug Harry Williams has resigned his position at the Gladstone bar and will devote his energies tu farming on the old Budd place, on the outskirts of the village. The Grand Rapids friends of Mrs, James Sullivan, of Deer River, will be pleased to learn that she 1s recovering from her illness since going to the hospital at Duluth. Col. M. A. Leahy and family will be residents of Madison, Wis., here- after. The school advantages were the principle inducement that caused these worthy people to leave Grand Rapids. “At a meeting of the Gun club held Wednesday evening very little busi- dess was transacted except the settle- ment of old business. Another meet- ing of the members will he held ina few days for the election of officers. Joseph St. Pierre, of Cohassett, re- turned this week from a business trip to the Pacific coast. He was in search of a better place for business, but returned fully convinced that Itasca county 1s as good as any place on earth. It was reported here this week that Al. Stevens and a companion were drowned on Biss lake on ‘Tuesday or Wednesday. They started out ina row boat and have failed to put in an appearance at their destination. No facts have yet been received. Fred Richardson and Charley Glenn, who have been prospecting tor gold in British Columbia during the | past three yeurs, write from Lulooet that they have just sold one of their ten claims for $15,0co cash, and that they have others which they regard as still more valuable. ‘The boys’ Grand Rapids friends will be pleased to hear of their good luck.
